Teac 3340

So my tascam 38 is my best friend but i'm always down for more machines and stuff. im sure alot of guys on here feel the same. I've been hounding my old music teacher to sell me his Teac 3340 4-track for the past two years. The poor thing just sits there on a counter top. Its really pleasant to look at and its pretty dusty but the heads are in good shape. It seems pretty well aligned and the pinch roller has held up nicely. I haven't powered it up yet but its been just sitting there since its last use some 10 years ago and he has informed me that it works electronically. If it has any problem i think it would be a belt or something, nothing major.

Anyway, what im getting at is: what would be a worthy price to pay for this machine?
 
$200-$250

That's just a guess of the top of my head
It would have to be fully functional.
$100-$150 if it's not.:eek:;)
 
I second that...I used to have one and it sounded wonderful.

I would buy it for just the history value.

I still have my 3340S, I started my studio with this machine and would never sell it. I also own an original Dolby unit (option) and a remote. I used to own a TEAC catalogue in the 70's and would look at the pictures of the products dreaming of owning a 3340S, and one day I did.

I noticed this one for sale recently, still bidding so it will be interesting to see what it go's for. It is in Australia though (where I am but 2000 miles from me).

I would say they could be worth 3 to 400 if in great condition. Ironically they can go for as much as some of the 1/2" decks. They both have their attractiveness. I actually paid $250.00 for my 2340sx. It's worth every penny.
 
Buy it, just the hub-adaptors are worth $ 50.00
But do a check how much wear the heads have, a well used deck with other problems attached can be a money-pit, so do a test on all functions before you start ordering tapes and other stuff.:)
 
I am all for turning a buck when you can, but one thing to consider that no one has brought up: How close are you to your guitar instructor? Ask yourself, "If I bought it for $100, and later he learns it's worth 4 to 8 times that, AND HE LEARNS I KNEW THAT WHEN I BOUGHT IT, how is he going to feel, and how is he going to react?"

Are you and he friends? Or very friendly? Does he pull the plug on lessons at the 50-min. point, or does he let you go over on occasion? ("ON OCCASION" being the operative term there- time is money, and teaching is at least one way he makes money.) Do you feel you have gotten "just" fair value for your money, or has he gone the extra mile for you frequently?

If he says, "Yeah, I know it's worth much more than that, but you can have it for $100," that's one thing. But treating him like your average garage sale mogul, or worse, like pawn-broker scum could come back to bite you on the butt.

And I make no apologies to pawn brokers- you guys know what you are like.
