I gotta say I completely disagree on this. I think her songwriting is incredibly average and boring, and I think the same thing about her voice. She's the biggest "I don't get it" I've come across in a long time.
Granted, I'm not a big country music fan, and I think a lot of the writing is average and lukewarm, so that's probably it. I'm not Taylor Swift's target audience. I'm sure the teenaged wrangler boys eat her up with a spoon.
It's really funny with this songwriting stuff. I listen to country sometimes (or pop too) and think ... "Geez this writing is sooooooooo basic and unspectacular. I just need to write a few tunes like this and sell them!" And then whenever I find myself writing something that sounds like that, I think to myself, "This sucks! It's so boring and plain. No one will ever like it!" And then I hear another plain, unspectacular hit song (like the Leona Lewis one "Bleeding Love"), and the cycle starts all over again.
Up until now I haven't concsiously tried to write a hit song and sell it. I've dabbled with the idea, started writing a few here and there, but then stopped because of the above-mentioned issue. And then I've gone back to writing my stuff for me. But I think I've reached the point where I'm ready to make a serious go at it. If other people are cashing in on unspectacular and average, then I'd like to as well!
