Taylor guitars

You go to the Taylor site, download specs and then call Elderly on the phone.

Taylor doesn't allow internet advertising or mention of its new products through anything but local dealers, so you aren't going to find a dealer through a typical Google search. Most large online vendors are likely to carry Taylor, but don't make it known through this medium. Taylor is pretty adamant about this policy as protecting the small dealer, so it doesn't do much good to squawk about it.

I've had good experiences with stringed instruments dealing with the folks at Elderly. It's based in Lansing Michigan; I did business with them in the mid - '70s when they (and I) were a bunch of longhairs. Stan Werbin started the place and is still there. I can't say enough good things about these guys. You might be able to shave $20 off a price by going somewhere else, but you'll end up losing more than you gain by doing it. These guys run the largest Martin dealership in the world. Basically, it's a crowd just like us. OK, OK - end of testimonial.

$2,200 is a horrible price for a 710. My 314ce had an $1834 price tab on it, and I got it for $1350 out the door, which is around $600 off the price tag before tax. The 710 costs 50% more, so you should aim for $900 off the price tag -> $1950. I bought mine from West LA music near UCLA.

The $2,200 was for the HD28. They quoted me $2,050 for the 710ce which is only $100 more than what you're saying. If the price difference isn't that great, I will buy it locally so I can have a relationship with the dealer for setup and repairs purposes. I would like to avoid the sales tax though. That's one reason I was exploring the mail-order option. $200 is a lot of money to pay for disgusting taxes. I could get another nice mic with that much dough. Thanks for the suggestions, all. I will check them out.

Steve, I was just going to say that even though I could probably save money by buying online, I believe guitars are like finger prints, ain't no two just alike. I was amazed at the difference in tone and playability between guitars. When I got my Taylor the dealer literally set out a bunch of guitar stands and kept feeding me guitars to try. I played Martins (I already have two so that was an early elimination), Goodalls, Guilds, Taylors and a couple of Larrivees. i wittled it down to two Taylors, both Grand Auditoriums. The XXV and one with a red cedar top (can't recall the model number). The point of that rant is I could've never made that call without having my hands and ears directly on those instruments.
Plus, striking up a relationship with someone local that you can talk to if you ever have questions or problems is worth the little extra money.

Yeah, I know you're right. Here in Podunk, Louisiana though, we have only two music stores, both of which are generally gougers and both of which have a very limited selection of anything. ( Mostly Alvarez, Ibanez, Washburn, Ovation....etc. ) The store that stocks the Taylors only had 4 models. The 710ce was so nice I could have bought it on the spot and been pleased with it. But, for 2-3,000 bucks, I really do need to do the homework, like you said. To Dallas I go, I imagine. Thanks.

I know what you mean. The proverbial rock and a hard place.

And if you're considering something in the $2,000 range, be sure to get some familiarity with Huss & Dalton, Collings, Breedlove, Bourgeois and True North.

In fact, here's a link to True North. This guy is just down the road from me and does some beautiful work.

Here's some pics. Might be worth a phone call to Dennis Scannell. Vermont ain't a bad place to visit this time of year, either. I'll introduce you to a few folks if you come up.

You get the idea...

Taylor guitar

I've owned a Taylor 810 for 6 years and still love it. I don't think that price is too far off and if that is "The Guitar" then go for it. I've played most every brand of guitar made over the years and have to say I love most of them. I also have a Martin D-18 and when I'm playing it, it is my favorite too!

Are the Taylors so consistent, say within a specific model, that all the 710's sound alike? I never found that to be true with Martins. I played 2 that were not as nice sounding as the one I ended up with. And recently I played 5 different Lowdens before settling on the one I have (O-10 cedar top). I only ask because I've always wanted to play an acoustic before buying.

Christine, I've never encountered any two guitars that sound the same.

Taylor

Christine, that's why, when you find that guitar you don't think you can live without, you buy it!

Swillpcb, that's what I did with the Lowden. A while back I played one in a shop in a different part of the country. I was on vacation and wasn't planning on buying a guitar at that time anyway. It was a really nice sounding one, but I didn't have the money then. But it really made me fall in love with the Lowden sound. So I left, but then agonized over it for months. Finally I went to a local shop and played a bunch more. After I found the one I couldn't live without, I had a death grip on it in the store. I was afraid to put it down for a second. I was sure if I did, someone else would pick it up, and buy it right out from under me! It just amazes me, the things we do to find the right guitar! :D

Christine

I'd like to listen to some of those Lowdens too but they aren't available anywhere around my neck of the woods. And you're right, I need to play them before I buy them. Will probably have to do some traveling when the time comes.

The 710 I played was nice enough to buy on the spot. But, I am going to try a bunch more before I lay down 2 or 3 thousand bucks. I'm gettin' old. This will probably be my last acoustic guitar purchase. I have to get it right!

Taylor

Steve, Never say this is the last one!!!!! That's just too sad to think about. There's always one more out there somewhere just waiting for you.

It will be my last "acoustic guitar" purchase. (Probably) However, I have many more purchases to make.... Few more mics, a really nice two channel preamp, a Strat or two, a good studio tube guitar amp, a really good keyboard, a 24 channel recorder...... well you get the picture. I'm not THAT old! :D

Hey Steve, you're never really old until the day comes that you decide it's not worth it to keep buying green bananas! :D

I know what you mean on the "final purchase" though. Fortunately, up to this point, I have not fallen into the electric guitar trap and all the accessories that go along with it. But $1800 for a Lowden certainly was enough to cause minor heart palpitations. Actually I could have walked out of there with several guitars. I liked a couple of Taylors, a Larrivee, and a Tacoma (who knew?) that sounded incredible. But my heart was set on the Lowden, as I listen mainly to he fingerpicking styles of Martin Simpson, Steve Baughman, Pat Kirtley, Pierre Bensusan, etc. Not that I can play like any of them, but it's still a fun trip! :)

I haven't checked the LOWDEN web site, but you might give it a glance and see if they have a list of local dealers. Not that I'm trying to empty your wallet for you! ;)

Happy picking!.......Christine

Well, my local dealer isn't that far off! I may can get em down a bit too.

There is a Lowden dealer in south Louisiana ( Lafayette ). I go down on business at times and will get to check them out. Thanks Christine. They look very nice.

Does anybody know where you can get Taylor acoustics by mail order? I found a 710ce at a local music store for $2,050 but I think I can beat that. Them Taylors are killer! Any Taylor owners out there with suggestions on a better model ( than the 710ce )? I'd be interested on any comments about Taylors or about shopping for higher-end guitars. I'm hoping to buy about mid-year. Thanks for any info!

You are pretty close to Jackson, Mississippi give http://www.lakelandmusic.com a try. They carry the full Taylor line of guitars for reasonable prices. Might be worth the drive.
