Taxcam 564 digital portastudio to Logic

I have a question re midi. I own a Tascam 564 digital portastudio and would like to transfer the midi tracks in a few songs to Logic. I've connected a USB/MIDI cable from my mac to the midi-out and midi-in of the 564. I've set up a new software track in Logic (I don't care if I retrieve the original sounds in the tascam at this point, although I would like to know how to do this). When I play one of the 564 songs, there's no signal showing in Logic. I know the cable works, so what setting on the 564 am I missing? Any help would be appreciated.

IIRC the MIDI port on the 564 only carries MTC & MMC data.
