Tascam Suport...?

In the manual for the -428 (I have one), this forum is mentioned as a user's forum/support group. So, you want to talk about it?

Just kidding.

But seriously, I've been through some "learning curve" with this booger myself, and maybe I can help you out? What's up?

Rog.

Allright, as far as I can tell, you don't have a problem with your 428, since it works with your lap-top and the same software program. Do you know for certain that the plug-in you were using is compatible with the rest of your set-up? Is there any reason it wouldn't be? (I wonder if, due to an incompatibility with your program, Battery caused a communication problem between Cubase and the 428? The 428 uses MIDI protocol to talk to Cubase, and vice-versa.)

I'm no techie, but I'm wondering if your trouble with getting MIDI samples left some wreckage behind in the pathway from the 428 to Cubase, and is blocking their communication. Any way you could check your program files to see if you can find any orphans hanging around in there?

Or could it be your keyboard? Definitely sounds like that plug-in/keyboard relationship is the source of your problem rather than the Tascam piece.

Can't imagine you taxed your system, looks pretty tough. Tried any other forums?

Rog.

They (Tascam) said that USB uses 70% system resources for processing audio.

I wonder why they don't just dump USB in favor of FireWire then. A fireWire external enclosure for a hard drive is all of $10 more expensive than a USB version. A combination USB/FireWire is all of $15 more. Given that the logic cucuitry is so cheap, they could make a combination USB/FireWire audio device, sell it for $20 more, make some extra money, and have a device that works well for advanced users with FireWire (which is really very commin, $20 PCI card, and bilt into most quality mother boards now) and still offer USB for laptop users and people with old machines and no PCI slot available.

There really doesn't seem to be an excuse that isn't lame, IMHO.

Firewire

Well...
It's a moot point now....i decided to dump the USB anyhow, and i bought the Tascam FW-1884 Firewire Controller. I was eyeballing it anyhow, and my malfunctioning 428 was just enough of an excuse to spring the big dollars to buy one.
However, if anybody has any ideas what was going on with the USB unit, i'd still like to figure it all out...at least i'll learn something from it all.

paperweight

I had my 428 for a month before I took it back to the shop and got a full refund. Too many compatibably problems from day 1. I didnt get it work proply once. The software bundel that it came with was in my opion was very poor.
