Tascam us 428 Play Back Help

I recently bought a US-428 in just a small home studio. I am using an E-Machine T1840 / 1.80 GHz / 40 gig harddrive / 640 meg
of Ram / windows xp home Edition. Everything seems to work fine except when I Play back I get Skips / Glitches in my play back . Is there anything I can do to fix this .

I've heard lots of this complaint, and wonder why I can't find more discussion on it, myself. I've noticed it too in mine, and my system is similar to yours, Pvoils. Have you tried to get in touch with Tascam?

I have a US-428, too, and had the same problems. The problem is with Windows XP; it has a glitch in its audio functionality. I did a search here and found that you need to download a Microsoft Service Patch SP1. Once you do that, you will be good to go.

63, what's your set-up, and how are you using your 428, if that's not a ridiculous sounding question? And, are you able to get 24-bit resolution while going 4 analog inputs at a time?

cutouts in audio...

can you post your results after downloading the windows service pack?

and the exact name of the service pack too...

thanks...I have xp too and just getting my system up and running...

US-428

I use the 428 and run XP. My software is Sonar 2.2 XL. I play back through a Hafler TA110 amp and a set of Tanno Pro- J monitors. I use an M-Audio DMP3 mic pre, too. I only have one mic right now, a Studio Projects B1. It, too, has served me well.

So far, I am pretty pleased with the set up. The initial setup quirk was really bumming me out for a while. It was a major pain. Like you, though, I posted here and read around and found a guy who had posted the solution.

My setup is nothing fancy, but it works and I am pleased with the fidelity of the end product, which is mostly acoustic based, maybe eight tracks. I do it all in my front living room when the kids and wife are asleep. I'm sure there is more the US428 will do that I have not yet discovered.

I have been away from recording for some 15 -20 years. I have not tracked more than two analog sources simultaneously, so I'm not sure how that works.

63, That's pretty much the essential ethic I'm going into, though more electric-oriented; the bare-bones idea, though. Don't know where it'll lead...

The 428 was the idea since it's a tactile controller with banks of faders you can go between on the virtual board, and, for me, a good set of choices for inputs- including 4 at a time: Good for transferring 4-track tape recordings. I have a Teac 4-trk reel-to-reel, and each track has its own line-out. I can record to tape, then edit in the computer. The dude I do a lot of work with also has individual outs on his 4-trk(we're a mostly analog neighborhood 'round here). It was also reasonably affordable for a flexible tool, evidently (but I'll tell you about that in a month!).

Your rig sounds solid and essential- and I can understand what it is, which is kind of a relief! Allright, thanks for the input, talk to ye'.

While I've heard lots and lots of stuff about installing SP-1 for Windows, I was just on the phone with Tascam Support and they have a "hot-fix" for the stuttering/skipping problem. It is not included in the SP-1 patch for Windows XP. It may be included in SP-2(?). They are supposed to email the file to me but as yet they have not. My problem was that along with the stuttering, I was also experiencing major system instability when using the 428. Windows would suddenly and unexpectedly crash when running anything that uses audio and trying to do something else (like importing a file, openning another application, etc). According to Tascam, they're blaming (Microsoft) Windows and the fact the USB is not an ideal platform to do audio with. They said that USB uses 70% system resources for processing audio. In any case, I've reverted back to Windows 98SE and have no problems whatsoever now. I guess my Windows XP CD will sit there until this issue will be definitively resolved...

I know a guy who swears W_98 is just fine for his software (CEP 2.0), though he doesn't mix in the software app. He does use Soundforge, though, and some other loops program.

Tascam support sent me this stuff, which seemed to do it's trick:

"Once you get the Hotfix Windows XP should work for you. We always recommend to use the latest version of software. Yes making your computer exclusive for audio is highly recommend.

"Below is more information on the hotfix.

"The shipping version of Windows XP has a number of bugs that can conspire to make digital audio stutter and glitch.
This update, commonly called the Messenger update, was developed in response to a problem with Microsoft's Messenger application program. Below is a link to the update

"If you are ready have SP1 installed you will need to contact Microsoft for further assistance.

Dunno, maybe you got this. Persevere,

Rog.

i'm debating on purchasing the 428 but after hearing this i dunno.
do you guys know if there is a problem with windows me?which i have. or is it just a glitch in xp?

428 & W_XP

After I downloaded the hotfix, I also upped the RAM to 266 DDR, and got a 2 Ghz processor. Also got an AGP graphics card... this all had nothing to do with the US-428, was just that my system needed to be juiced up a bit. I think the hotfix is key to XP handling audio no matter what you get for an interface.

My '428 does have a minor glitch, think it's a warranty fix- the Overload LED is stuck 'on' in channel 1, and the Select LED is on whenever I open a session on the same channel. And once the fader on ch 1 did fail... I closed the session, turned off the machine. When I came back later, it was working. ? Might have to do with the fact I crashed Cubasis once...!

However, everyone else I know or have spoken to who owns a 428 is/has been quite happy with theirs.

You might also check out the M-Audio Omni, that one looks cool for USB too. www.soundonsound.com might have sources to look at also.

The '428 seems to do the trick for me- I'll have to get that channel worked out, though.
Make sure, obviously, that your application will support the 428...

Rog, not an Authority!

I'm not sure how it works with ME. I run XP, and after the initial glitches and the SP 1 fix, everything works fine. I have not had any issues with the US-428 after that hellish first week . . .

See four posts previous to yours... included in the post, if you read it, is the link for the 'hotfix'. It seems to work.

Just click on start and select windows update. It should show you any updates that your PC needs.

TASCAM SUPPORT

How do you get in touch with Tascam support? I looked for their website forum, but it appears to have been discontinued. Then i searched (and i mean SEARCHED) for a phone number to call. The best i got was the parent company, Teac. I emailed them through their website and i phoned them and left messages....no reply. How do you get in touch with them and actually get a live human?

Funny, I haven't heard back from them lately, either- just lately, the last few weeks...
I was talking to a dude at: Bgallegos@teac.com
Phone is the same as TEAC: (323) 726-0303.
Dunno... maybe we're all that's left. What'd'you want to know, anyway?...

Rog.

I was having problems with my Tascam US 428 (posted in another forum in this BBS). I figured if there was someone in this thread who knew how to get in touch with them, maybe they could tell me how to get in touch with them.
