Tascam US 144 Low Volume.

Im am using an HP laptop with AMD Turion X2 1.6 Ghz processor,1Gb of ram,80 Gb hard drive. I've messed around with the US 144 for a couple of weeks and just cant seem to get good volume when recording through
my Sure KSM27 condencer mic. (phantom power on)And the recording I do get is bassy and muddy. Guitar recording direct into the unit seems fine. I am using Sonar Home Studio 6.

Any input would be appreciated.

Whattya mean 'good volume'? Are you tracking with -12 Db peaks?
