I am 17 yrs old and have recently started a punk rock type band with some friends of mine. We recently purchased a TASCAM 4-track Porta03 analog from a used music store for like $70 bucks. The recorder came you no instruction manual. We are anxious to record, but we are clueless as to how to do it. We are a 3-piece band, I play bass and sing. Our main question is....the drums! how the hell do we set up the mics to record them? I hope this makes sense. We have no idea how many mics to use and what levels they should be set at and how we will still be able to put in our guitars and vocals on the 4-track. Any help would be appreciated, or if somebody would point us in the right direction.

Thanks,
Rob

I used a pota 03 back in the day. I found an interesting way of recording the drums with that unit; One standard microphone (used as an overhead for snare, toms, cymbals etc.), and.....a 6x9 car speaker for the kick-drum mic. Not kidding!
People will tell you this is not possible because of impedence issues, but I found this method to produce very good results.

However; this method is only possible when you are recording one source at a time. Being that the 03 has only two mic/line inputs, the issues of mic placement for recording a whole band (ie all instruments and vocals simultaniously) is yet ANOTHER headache. I'ts virtually impossible to get a decent band recording with only two mics. BUT, If you guys can spare a few more $$, get yourselves a cheap RadioShack mixer & some more mics.
Then, you'll have so many more options.
