Tascam MX-2424 or Mackie HDR-2496

Still not sure but....
In my quest to find the right hard disk recorder, I had been looking closely at the Tascam MX-2424 and the Alesis ADAT HD24.
Last night I came upon a great deal on the Mackie HDR-2496 . Any users of the Mackie HDR 2496 here?
I picked up a demo unit for $1999 about half off from retail price. I have a 45 day return window and the full manufactures warranty. Besides the obvious (dents, scratches and power up issues) I would like to know if there are any details a current owner would suggest I should check out to make sure it's operating correctly. What is the current or best software to run etc.....
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
