Hey-- is the NR on the non-Dolby S versions of the msr16 any good? And is there any way that I could patch in dolby s instead of the dolby type I?

I have an opportunity to get a msr16 for $700... Everything works, but this NR and the condition of the heads (which seller says are good, but I can't really verify before buying) are in question for me.

Also, should I take it to a tech to do biasing for 456 and cal as soon as I get it?

Thanks.

i dont know of any way to patch around the nr but is disable able...huh? im assuming that your principal use is for drum tracking... like alot of guys... so i would just run it at max speed and slam it with signal... as for bias and such i would seriously concider buying the test tapes and learn to do it yourself as it needs to be done on regular basis... especially if your not buying tape in bulk... it should be redone every time you change batches not just brands or formulae...

I was actually going to use it as a standalone, a complete alternative to my DAW. 16 tracks is enough for my project to have everything.

Anyway, I decided against the msr16 based on the lack of dolby s, which everyone in my searches seems to find incredible. I think good NR is pretty essential with such narrow tape width per track. I'm still looking for a fostex g16s or msr16s, and I'll keep your advice in mind-- truly beneficial. Ty

I think you are making a mistake by not taking a msr16 for 700 bucks if its in nice condition.
Have you heard dbx type 1 on a tascam machine or have you just heard something bad about it from someone else? If the later is the case then you may be passing on a great sounding machine.

on a 16 track deck with no repro head I would kill myself re-calibrating all the time. a machine like that shouldn't lose its calibration as easily as a pro-deck.

yeh-- I had dbx on my 388 and I really didn't like the sound. Cut too deep into the signal. The 388 probably could've used a good calibration, so maybe I wasn't getting a good picture of what it was capable of.

Anyway, I'm investigating a g16s for basically the same amount of money in trade for a bass I have. The heads on that one look great. It comes with a bunch of new 456, too. And it has dolby s.

DBX I can be perfect, but everything needs to be calibrated properly. The same goes for Dolby S: if it isn't calibrated properly, it's not going to sound right.

I dunno. I have a msr16 with DBX and I think it sounds great. Never heard the Dolby-S version, though, I can't really compare.

drat... none of these 16-trackers have repro heads? FUN.

The dbx NR on the TASCAM MSR/TSR machines is excellent. Those machines have a good rep for the integration of the NR.

The latest generation TASCAM and Fostex machines all had a single rec/repro head. It takes a little more time if doing a complete calibration, but after it is set, it stays set.

exactly. My fostex has been running without a calibration for over a year now.
