track #5 is the only track that once a tone is recorded on to it the playback is very weak. i put the same tone through each of the 16 tracks and this was the only one to play back at less than half of what i recorded on to it.
does anyone know what might be the problem and better yet the solution?
thanks

Assuming head is clean and demag'd? If so, could be just out of adjustment on that amp. Do you have a service manual and alignment tape?

track 5

thanks for reply.... i do not have a manual or alignment tape yet.
i have a demag but haven't used it lately. i am an analog guy from way back
that has gone protools and now back to my tape machine.
when i put another reel of tape from a session from the past i realized
that track five played the audio back just fine.
i am now going to try to find a clean spot on the tape and record something to track 5 and see what happens.
i'll let you know what happens.... i am hopeful that it may have been the tape.
thank you

bad tape

i have deduced that the tape was bad.... i put another tape up and recorded to track 5 and all is good.
thanks for the help

I ran into this exact problem last Saturday with a Tascam 42 that I had received that Friday.

I directed that question to 3 persons before it dawned on me to try a different reel of tape.

Wow what a revalation!

It was a Big DAH for me!

Stick to new tape, and it won't stick on YOU!

It was a reel that was handy. It played fine from someone else's previous recording but would not record for me.

It was a partial roll that I subsequently spooled onto a 7" reel to be thrown out.

How do you like your msr 16? Are they good decks? Im thinking about upgrading to one!

I had an MSR-16s. Besides the dolby noise reduction being a little quirky, it was a great machine. Most people that have owned them or know about them rave about them with good reason. Solid and HEAVY, too. Very Hi-Fi sounding I always thought.

They're awesome decks, and not just because I've been trying to sell mine. :-p

In all seriousness, I think they're great, solid machines.

What kind of mixer would be compatible with one? How much would you sell it for? I dont want to use the noise reduction cause i want noise!

A 16 channel mixer will work if it has direct outs (or inserts) and tape returns for each channel.

If it has no tape returns or B mix inputs you'll need at least another 16 channels to monitor on in a split configuration.

A 16 or 24 channel eight buss recording board is ideal with a 16 track machine, but as I said if the console is lacking the tape returns or B mix input you'll need a 32 channel console to get around this limitation.
