Tascam M-312 w/ broken fader?

Hey everyone. 1st post here. Got a Tascam M-312 in great condition. Cleaned it all up and looks awesome. However, when I tested every channel, I found that channel 4's fader doesn't work.

Everything else works, except the fader. I opened it up and everything looks intact. Then again, I'm not keen on this stuff. I did not use any cleaners/lubes when I cleaned the mixer.

I just wiped everything down. I will try swapping faders with another channel and see if it works. Until then, is there any advice/insight? Thanks.

Note: I hope it's an easy fix. If not, and needs to be replaced, are they easy to find? I couldn't find anything online. They are low-profile with a cheap feel. Not sure if they're Alps.

Maybe I'll get a reply after the 100th view.

Or maybe you'll get a reply when somebody who has some thoughts reads it.

Those are indeed ALPS units.

Do the fader swap and see if that works. If the swapped fader works and the bad fader still doesn;t work on the different channel then I'd first check for broken solder joints on the fader. Short of that I'd open the fader up and see if the wiper is bent and not making contact with the element.

Thanks sweetbeats. I appreciate the information. I'll report back soon.

Well, I can't swap faders because they're soldered in. I did however open and clean the fader (like in the video posted here). I didn't have any cleaner, but I did lightly brush the gunk off the wiper.

I did bend them up ever so slightly (like in the video). Put everything back together and still no luck. Everything works on the channel except the fader.

I didn't see any broken solder joints either. Something else in the channel strip is wrong. Not sure how to fix it. Any ideas?

Is it possible to short the fader contacts (where the solder is) with a piece of wire to see if you get a full volume signal to test that it is indeed the fader that is the problem?

Alan.

Never thought about that. Gonna get a soldering kit. I'd like to replace the fader. If that doesn't work, at least I have a spare. Anyone know if Tascam has these faders? Been checking eBay, but haven't seen any. Thanks.

Have a look for the fader part number and the brand and do a google search, Tascam may not have any but there could be stock floating around from the original supplier, Tascam did not make their own faders they bought them in.

Alan.

Thanks Alan. I have looked online for them, but not much info. I'll try that.

Sweetbeats, you mean a photo of the fader? If so, it looks just like the one you posted here before (and in the fader cleaning video, which is awesome by the way), except it's soldered in.

Can you look at it and see if it says 5k or 10k on it anywhere? Can't remember which the M-300 uses and I'm too lazy to look in the manual.
