TASCAM 788 - LCD Going Blank

I just bought a TASCAM 788 via eBay (the item was in perfect, near mint condition with original packaging, cables and manuals and from a buyer with 100% positive feedback, so good vibes there) and despite everything appearing to work fine I have a small issue I'd like to bounce off you folks in this forum.

I started using it last night for the first time and while playing around with some of the pre-set effects the LCD menu display suddenly went blank, clean as a fresh slate. I turned the contrast knob a few times and it came back. But after a short time it went blank again.

I powered off the unit, powered it back on, and everything seemed great, the display lasted until I was finished with my session.

This morning I powered it on and after a couple minutes it went blank again. I did the power off, power on, and this time left the contrast knob in the halfway position instead of almost full, as it had been. The display lasted until I was finished this time.

Question: is there a known issue with the menu display going blank and is this indicative of a growing problem I will need to have looked at? The TASCAM site has no troubleshooting for the LCD and of course the forums there are toast.

Any help/advice/info appreciated.

Thanks guys!

It sounds like an oxidized pot on the contrast control. Maybe try spraying in a good contact cleaner into the shaft and working it in by rotating the control back and forth several times and that should fix it.

Good luck! :)

Thanks Ghost,

Sorry to be so ignorant, but what exactly is the type of cleaner I should use? I have an electronics cleaning spray I use for my PC, it's a compressed gas spray. Would that work?

Thanks!

I use a product from Caig Laboratories called Caig Deox-it. It is available in several forms.

Check out their site.

Caig

The pump spray version should work.

Cheers! :)

You can get spray contact cleaner at a trusty old Radio Shack also.

Let's hope it's just a dirty pot.
