Tascam 788 effects question

I recorded live drums on my 788 with the effect set up as individual channel compressors. When I do this is the compressed signal actually being recorded on the hard drive? When playing the song back I sure notice a difference with the compressors
still on or turned off. What I'm trying to do here is compress
my signals when I record them so I can use the effects for other things like reverb and gating during mixdown.

On playback was I actually recompressing an already compressed signal? Can you not do what I would like which is compress a signal during recordind and use the effects for other things
during mixdown.

Usually the compressed signal gets recorded. What do you mean with "playing back" - do you use the mix-down-mode or the track cue? When you're mixing down, you can compress the recorded (compressed) track again...

The 788 has two effect units, one for dynamics (e.g. compression), one for modulation, reverb, delay... You can use both at the same time while mixing-down, so you don't need to compress signals during the recordings.
 
Yes, when using Channel Compression on the 788, it is recorded to the hard drive. The compressor is INSERTED into the signal path.

So, yes, you need to turn the Channel dynamics off when playing back or you will be hearing double the compression.

You can record with compression, then pre-master with effects, that's ONE of many different record/playback setups.
 
For your sanity.

Yes, it's best to record clean and then compress when you mixdown, as "Move over Kate" suggests.

"Trigger" is also correct... and yes there are other ways to setup the compression process on the 788... even more if you have outboard gear.

(Hey Trigger... yeah... another user I recognize from the now defunct 788 hosted forum.)
