Tascam 414 or rather Tascam 688?

Hi, I'm a newbie and currently own a Tascam 414 Portastudio. Is it me or is it VERY limited. I'm wondering if I can make it last longer with the right MIC's, compressors, etc.

If it's crap, I was thinking about getting the Tascam 688 (for $500 - if that's a good deal). Is this a good idea?

Also, are there any good recordings on the Internet made PURELY with the 414? Am I just not doing something right, or does the recorder just plain suck?! (BTW, it's my first recorder and I didn't have a huge budget at the time.)

So what's the best thing to do? Save money for ADAT and several thousand dollar console, keep the recorder I have now and keep practicing, or get something like the 688 that seems like it's a step higher?

Thanks =)

El Barto, do the sweepable mids work really good on the 688? What I mean is, does it isolate certain bands pretty well, or does it pull too many other frequencies with it?

I have a few other questions too:

Does it have external Buss/Tape-Out?
Also, how's the MIDI control - in terms of software Start/Stop/Tape-Cue?

- Thanx -

I'll never part with my 238. 688 238 234 are awesome decks especially when you consider what you can pay for a barely used unit compared to what they orininally cost.And cassettes are cheap

The sweepable mids work rather well...I don't have the greatest ears so I can't really tell if they're pulling in other frequencies really, but tinkering around with them, you can usually boost or lower what you need. And yes, it has individual tape outputs. I have never used the MIDI controls so I can't tell you how well they work.

I keep hearing about this recorder and I've never seen one out there. Anyone have a link of a pivture of one? I'm not planning on getting one, I'd just like to see one.
Thanks,
H2H
