i just purchased a used tascam 488 mkii portastudio . i cant seem to record on tracks one and two. i can hear everything in the mic and i select to group 1 and record but during playback no sound comes up. does this commonly happen and if its broken does anyone know where i can get it fixed at? i've just wanted to record on one of these for a long time...

I bought one off ebay a while back, and it only records on track two and eight, I was real pissed about it, but these tracks sound fine, so I guess I'll be doing some bouncing...

centroid. email tascam and ask for a list of repair centres.
peace.

:D Yo Troid 1010101010101-Bingo!

You can call Sweetwater and ask "how much." Of course, you will pay for the shipping. Sweetwater purports to have their own staff to do repairs on most gear.

As the MAN said, you can also search for Tascam repairs via Tascam. Depending where you live, you might even find someone in your area.

Ahh, the perils of E-Bay.

The 488mkll that I had sometimes lost channel 8 .To think that these once sold for $1600 or so is unreal.I liked mine but on cassette format you can only do so much .Get a BOSS 1600 CD it's BETTER!

I had one in back in '97, I sold it when I bought more pro stuff. It never really gave me any track problems. I used to clean the heads and pinch rollers after every use. I never abused the thing. I hated the fact that is was tape based 8-track but it was still a good piece to goof around on. Eventually I got my hands on an MPC2000 and DPS12 and only used the Tascam as a mixer/pathcbay. Now I strictly use the computer to produce stuff. Best transition I ever did! :)

Anyone have a Tascam 488mkII for sale? I am in the digital age now (currently using a Roland VS2400CD), but I used to have one (back in the day) and I still have alot of my old tapes that I'd like to remix (you know, old memories and good times).

:D Hahahhaahahah I still have my old tapes too. I should of transferred them to the computer before I sold the machine. But I would of had to only been able to record 2 tracks at a time. That would of been hell to do.

You ain't kidding! Been there, done that - it IS hell. But it can certainly be done if you have loads of patience + time.

Plus the fact that the tape doesnt seem to run at an exact 100BPM tempo. The tape seemed to slow down as it moved down the reel of tape. Probably has something to do with the tension and weight as the tape moves from reel to reel as its playing. I did try to transfer one song and noticed this "slowing down" effect.

^^ Yes but you cant separate them if you were to dump them into another DAW, like Cubase or Sonar. The Tascam doesnt have direct outputs for each track.

I thought about that, but I wasnt sure if you could technically get away with it. My sound card only has 2 inputs anyway so I never actually never tried it. It seems extremely messy to do (a spaghetti of cables).

In light of that page you linked I guess it can be done.

Naw, it's easy. Only 8 cables. If I can do it, anybody can do it. Just print out the directions and go one step at a time. I believe I used the last set of instructions from that page. I WAS going to get a 688 just because of the seperate outs, but I'm glad I didn't now because I don't need such a monster that weighs three times as much, in my house.

If they dont have 8 inputs they cant, I only have 2 so I couldn't. lol.

You are right though.

does that only work with the mkii or can I do it with my original 488?

I haven't looked yet.
