Hey there, I have a Tascam 424 mkiii, which I have used for recording pretty simple songs, not lots of tracks, guitars and vocals and keyboards and such, but never more than four things at once.

Well, now I am planning on using the tape recorder to record a full rock and roll band, with much more than four instruments. I am just wondering if anyone can give me some advice as to what tracks I should clump together. Instruments will include: Drums, bass, two guitars, two (or three) saxophones, many vocals, two keyboards.

If I only have four tracks to work with, should I clump the keyboards and guitars all on one track? Maybe the saxes and vocals on another? Do I absolutely have to give the drum and bass their own tracks?

Obviously this is all very new to me, and any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
It's pretty ambitious to try and record so many instruments on only 4 tracks! But, in the olden days of recording many records were produced with an even greater amount of performers on only 1 or 2 tracks.

My advice to you is to take advantage of the additional channels provided on the 424 and try and record almost everything live. Try using between 4-6 mics to capture as best a live room sound as you can.
