Tascam 388 - Channel 7 recording quiet

Hey,

So Channel 7 records quiet. Tested on another 388 and the playback is the same. But playback of a good tape sounds fine on the problematic 388.

I swapped REC play cards 4-7, 6-8 cards and hit the connectors with some deoxit & recorded some test tones across all tracks on the AU388.

Monitor section: 7 plays back quiet and distorted, 8 plays back clean
LR: same as monitor section.

I'm away from the machine, and these tests were a while ago, but i'm pretty sure I swapped the channel cards too and the problem persists.

What else could be the problem, or what's the common reason for this?

Did you mean you swapped 5-7 and 6-8 cards?

Does track 7 erase? Like if you put track 7 into record but assign no signal does whatever was on track 7 erase clean and quiet?

If it plays back okay then it’s not the playback electronics or the head or head wiring. It’s an issue with the record amplifier or signal path from the record amp. But it could also be an issue with the bias amp for track 7 which is why I’m asking you to tell me if it erases.
