I just pulled the 38 apart to do the drive belt and try to replace the bulbs in the vu meters. I had one light working, and I had powered it on to check while apart. Still on, I started slowly pulling the meter away from the chassis to take a quick look and my one working bulb blew out! Think this is actually the bulbs or did I short something?

Edit: Without even pulling a meter apart, i touched the bulb leads to the posts of a non-working meter and got nothing...

The meter may need to be grounded to the chassis to work. Don't know for sure as I don't have the schematic in front of me.

You may have also shorted the bulb while pulling it out.

???

I haven't had mine apart since 2005 when I replaced a belt.

Ah, no emergency. I blew a fuse! (dumbass...)

The giveaway was that the counter stopped working too. Replaced fuse, bulb came back, tested new bulb and voila! Lights.

Ah, no emergency. I blew a fuse!

I was going to suggest that, actually. And yeah, I managed to do that to my Revox once, I was adjusting something while it was running and earthed the erase head. I had a bit of trouble finding a compatible fuse locally...

Does anyone have a part number for the bulbs from PE? I can even pick mine up because I live about an hour away from Dayton.

Go get em!

They are small but better deal than $8 each from Tascam!

They were pretty easy to install, actually; just a little dab of solder on each end to hold them in. Yes, way better than the 8.00 bulbs and you can't even tell the difference if they're frosted or not...

Paying $8.00/lamp would have frosted my cookies!!!

Not too brite of Tascam to charge that much.
