Hi

I recently obtained a tascam 38 but it's not in a working condition.

Symptoms:
- power on: ok, machine powers up, capstan motor spins and capstan is turning, all lights of the vu meters are ok, on/off buttons of the channels are ok.
- FFWD: when i push FFWD there is no action
- RWD: when i push RWD there is no action
- play: right motor starts spinning counterclockwise (which is ok), tape is pushed up towards the heads, the capstan takes the tape but the left motor is not spinning to take up the tape on the reel

I checked the motors: they are ok (you can check this with a 9 volt battery).
My guess is that the control pcb is not working or the power supply pcb has a mallfunction.

what is your advise for this great machine?

regards

steve

Check the brakes.

Check that the brakes are releasing and the brake solenoid has full and free motion.;)

no movement in the brakes of such kind when I press ffwd or rwd. when I use the play function: brakes do release but no movement on the right motor.

Is the tape threaded correctly? Check this out.

My friend,...

Check that the EDIT button is not depressed. Pressing Edit disables the right reel motor for what's called "dump-edit",... (dumps unwanted tape off the reel completely during editing).;)

The left reel doesnt take up any tape in play. Its the other way around.
The supply reel is on the left and the takeup reel is on the right.

problems solved thanks to a german company which delivers tascam and teac parts at reasonable prices.
