Yamaha MD8 - Tascam neo

I'm thinking of upgrading from a Yamaha MD8 to the Tascam neo. Will it be as straight forward to use?

I've taken advantage of the neo introduction to buy a mk ll at a very good price.....it should be a giant step up from my dp01-fxcd which is only 8 track, 16 bit, and is without onboard compression.....hope it's as easy to use as the dp01.....it was delivered this afternoon.....I should know by the weekend

Yep, me too. Pics of the twin 2488 setup coming soon!

I've had a chance to do some recording on my new 2488 mk ll today and I have to say that the difference between this recorder and a dp01-fxcd is tremendous.....first of all, the sound difference between the 16 bit dp01 and the 24 bit 2488 is incredible - and it records at a much higher volume....the interface was a bit scary at first, with its software pan pots, eq controls, and reverb controls, but it is a simple thing to get used to....since I wouldn't trust myself to do my own mastering, the additional features of the neo don't really interest me.....I highly recommend taking advantage of the current price reductions on this model as the neo takes its place.....

it has much better pre amps than the dp01....with the dp01 I needed to use an external pre amp to record at a decent volume....

Anyone tried the mastering FX on the neo yet? I'm intrigued to know how good / bad they are.

Looks like there's a hard limiter in mastering FX then. Wonder how that compares with the awesome Wave Hammer plugin in Sound Forge? There's a guy over on the tascam forums who was talking about using a TC Finalizer but I reckon the neo has most of those bases covered. Just a shame there is still no way to trim the start of the master without trimming the original tracks also. If Tascam are listening, please can you add this and an autofade facility to the MKIV? ;)

btw have been playing with my MKII recently and I've noticed the transport controls seem to behave a little differently to the MKI. Weird

Maybe not the ideal solution you're looking for, but if you want to trim the master without trimming the individual tracks, you could always import the L & R Master tracks into 2 tracks and trim them separately.

Good point. Actually I don't know why I hadn't thought of that before. Now how about that autofade facility? (come on tascam how hard can it be :p )

Great deal on Tascam 2488 Neo

I got the Neo from an eBay store (authorized Tascam dealer) at the Buy It Now price of $618. Add in the Microsoft Live.Com / PayPal "cashback" refund at 30% (yes 30%!), I received a $185.70 credit to my PayPal account. Add in Tascam's $40 rebate offer for November 2008 and the bottom line purchase of a brand new Tascam 2488 Neo was $393.29 net. Shipping and insurance were extra.

I don't think I can find the mkii at that price....

That is a very good price! Sometimes I hate living on this side of the pond!

Ebay Tascam dealer

I understand they ship internationally...

I can not post URLs yet as I am a brand new member, but they are musiciansadvocate on ebay. It really is the live.com cashback that makes the big difference!

good luck-
Bruce

Lots of places do say they ship internationally but by the time HM customs have taken their cut and including the extra shipping costs it might not be worth it. And of course then there is the voltage difference. Sadly

Exporting UNMIXED 24-bit tracks out of Tascam 2488 mkii or 2488neo into PC

Read all the threads by you Tascam 2488 mkii and Tascam 2488neo owners.

Started a new thread, but posting here too because I figure all of you are the ones who know the answer to my question:

Here it is:

Got a great recording project set up with a great band. Going to spend five days in a renovated castle in Central Europe. Going to track the session onto my new Tascam 2488neo. BUT, one band member needs to take away UNMIXED session tracks on his PC, where he will edit, process and mix... and I will take my tascam 2488neo elsewhere.

So I must get UNMIXED multi-tracks out of the Tascam 2488neo and into his PC in a speedy and efficient manner. And we want it to be 24-bit unmixed tracks.

PROBLEM: I know that you can export a wav stereo file in 16 bit by MIXING a song down first and then sending it out USB 2.0 to a PC. But what about transferring UNMIXED tracks out of Tascam 2488neo and into a PC using the USB 2.0.

I read on these boards who 24-bit can be maintained by transferring the tracks as mono. I need advice on that process and how time consuming it is.

For example, if an unmixed song has 16 individual tracks when UNMIXED, how can I get each individual track out of the Tascam 2488neo and into a PC quickly --- unmixed... so the mixing can be done there. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, can I get those tracks into the PC without going down to 16-bit... keeping it all in 24 bit.

1) Do I have to transfer each track one at a time as a mono file?
2) Do I have to first play each track in real time in order to save each as a 24-bit mono file? Or is it just a process of dragging and dropping?

At the end of the week, I will keep my Tascam 2488neo machine... but the band member will go away to Berlin and do mixing. So is it feasible to get all of the individual tracks UNMIXED out of the Tascam 2488neo and into a PC for further editing.. IN 24 BIT????? Or will it be extremely time consuming?

I expect it works the same way on the the Tascam 2488 mkii. So if anybody has experience on either machine, please shout me out. Many thanks for all tips and hints. I expect my Tascam 2488eo to arrive next week. Trying to get questions answered before it arrives so planning can move forward. THANKS!!!

Every track in a mono file.

All you have to do is export them to CD...or USB straight into your computer. There's no reason to have to change them to 16bit if you didn't record them in 16 bit to start with. Same goes with the stereo mix. If it's 24 bit, you can export it 24 bit.

Just go to your MENU and select WAVE IN/OUT. From there select either CD EXPORT or USB EXPORT and select the tracks you want to export by highlighting the track(s) you want to export and hitting the insert button to get a check mark beside the track.

When you've selected all the tracks you want to export, hit YES.

You can do what you are asking by usb or you can create a cd with the unprocessed tracks on it.

Tha important part is to make sure you create a new song for each new song. In other words don't record one long set of songs. If you don't break them up then you'll be exporting one track at a time because of their size.

How to is in the manual and pretty user friendly and yes you can export in 24bit wav files.
