I made some tracks on my friend's 2488. He hosted the files on his server for me to download when I got home. I downloaded these wav files and burned them on a blank cd-r (using Windows Explorer (uses a Roxio version)). I burned 2 discs - one as data, the other as audio - inserted them into my 2488 at home, followed instructions to import wav files, and I keep getting an error message that the wrong disc is inserted on both of them. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me? Thanks..

P.S. I am using Imation CD-R's that are 1x-52x compatible.

You could hook the 2488 up to your computer and do a USB import.

...but if you want to import from CD, you only need one disk containing .wav files.

"The 2488 can only read mono WAV format files from the top-level directory (root) of a data disc with no other files on the disk. Files in subdirectories cannot be imported."

Are you meeting those criteria?

Thanks for the reply. I started out using the cd-r disk burned for "data". I just did burned the other one (audio) because the data one didn't work. I believe that you are suppose to use the data format though.

"The 2488 can only read mono WAV format files from the top-level directory (root) of a data disc with no other files on the disk. Files in subdirectories cannot be imported."

I admit - I don't quite understand this. These are mono WAV files transferred to a server. He e-mailed me the links. I had to right click on each WAV file in the e-mail and choose "save target as..." and saved it to my download folder. Just clicking on the track links made them play in my media player.

Next, I opened up Windows Explorer, found the files and dragged them (there were 4) to the cd burner drive. A "burner" wizard popped up and prompted me to name, and then choose burning format - data or audio. I chose data, it burned and completed and ejected.

Put it into my 2488, followed directions to import Wav files and the "wrong disc" error keeps coming up. That's where I'm at.

Can anyone explain what the wording in bold means and how I can verify? I am not a computer expert - that's why I invested in the 2488, not in computer recording . Any help is appreciated...

I can explain the wording in bold. It means that the files you want to import must reside at the very top level of the directory structure of the CD and not be within a "folder" or subdirectory of the CD. So if you are dragging and dropping a folder onto the CD when you burn it, that won't work. You must drag and drop the files themselves, and not the folder that they reside in.

A couple of other thoughts come to mind.

You may need to be using the audio rather than the data format.

Are you using CD-RW disks, and if so, are you finalizing them before inserting into the 2488? If not, you should be.

Again, you can sidestep the whole CD issue by hooking the 2488 up to your PC via USB and importing that way instead.

They are in the "temporary folder" which is automatic when you drag them from the download folder to the cd burner drive, which in this case is (E).

I tried the audio format as well using the same method as described below.

I am using CD-R discs, not CD-RW. I believe they are being finalized automatically - there is no prompt that asks after they are burned. Plus the computer seems to make those processing sounds of burning followed a by finalization, much like when I burn songs.

I don't know what kind of connnection to use to hook it up directly - USB to USB? I see there is a USB port on the back of the 2488. How much they go for?

I will make another attempt at it while I am home tonight. Thanks for all your help so far...

When I get home tonight, I am going to try using a Jump Drive to install via USB. If this doesn't work, I don't know what else to do.

That's not going to work. The 2488 is not going to recognize a jump drive. Remember that the 2488 is not a PC. But it can pretend to be a USB drive.

If you follow the directions in your manual and hook up your 2488 to your PC via a standard USB cable ($4.99), the PC sees the 2488 as a removable device to which you can move files from the PC. Don't forget to use the "Safely remove hardware" icon in your PC's system tray to disconnect the USB connection to the 2488 when you are finished.

Back to the CD, though. I'd like for you to look at something for me. On the CDs that you burned, when you look at the CDs on your computer using Windows Explorer, are you seeing a folder at the top level, or just files? If you are seeing a folder, then the 2488 will not recognize the files within that folder.

If you have created a "temporary downloads" folder or something like that when you downloaded the files from your friend's server, you need to select the files discretely for burning and NOT THE FOLDER. In other words, don't drag that "temporary folder" onto the CD - just the files. The 2488 cannot import anything from a CD that is in a folder or subdirectory.

Let me know how it turns out. The process should work for you one way or another.

OK - that makes sense - scratch that idea. I will look when I get home and see what is showing up on the cd - I admit, I never looked. I'll get back to you and let you know what I find out. I don't know that I'll be able to get to Best Buy for a USB to USB cable, though - if that's the route I have to take - probably won't get their until tomorrow. Thanks for your continued assistance...

Not to worry. We'll get you fixed up eventually! :D

What do you have the files named as? They need to be named in the old DOS format meaning 8 letters or numbers then .wav so for example, song0004.wav It will not recognize it if it is not in this form from my experience. Also you need to ask your friend if the files are in stereo or mono. Since you aren't sure what this means it will be much quicker to ask him. I'm going to guess they are stereo in which case again it will not recognize them even if you have them named right and on the cd correctly.

CERE8,

Thanks for the input - I didn't know about the DOS format. I 'll experiment with that as soon as I can. I did try the USB transfer per recommendation of Zaphod B and it worked. Thanks for all the suggestions and guidance...

If the files were exported from a 2488 (as mentioned in the original post), the wav files should be in the proper format. Unless khunsonjr exported the stereo masters as wav files, instead of the raw tracks. If that's the case, then using the DOS format & mono (also 44.1 24-bit) would apply.
