Tascam 2488 Paired Track Question

Regarding the stereo paired tracks on the 2488, If I take a synthesizer's left output and insert it in channel 1 and right output into channel 2, can I route channel 1 to track 13 and channel 2 to track 14 - OR - do I need some dumb stereo plug that combines the synth's left and right outputs and can only insert it into one channel to route to paired tracks 13 and 14.

In other words, are the paired tracks independetly recordable from different channels or is it that both tracks have to be recorded at the same time and ONLY from from one channel source?

Track 1 to 12 are independant and 13 through 24 are stereo pairs controlled by one fader per pair.

For the most part I don't pay much attention and just look at it as an 18 track DAW but if space is needed I could record synth lets say to tracks 1 & 2, mix it with effects, and bounce it to 13/14. 1 & 2 are now free for something else with different effects.
