I've got a used 2488 off of ebay and have been trying to use it with Rosegarden. The problem I run into is this:

With a midi cable connecting the midi out of the tascam to the midi in on the computer and
with the tascam set to MMC master with Rosegarden set to MMC slave - if I hit play on the tascam it plays and Rosegarden also plays - if I push and hold down the record button and then hit play on the tascam the tascam starts recording but Rosegarden sits idle. I thought you would want the sequencer to start when you put the tascam in record mode - I don't see how you could keep the tracks in sync any other way. I also moitored the midi data going into the computer and down't see any control information coming from the tascam when you put it in record mode. Any directrion would be appreciated. If I can't figure this out by Wednesday night I'll turn around and sell the tascam on ebay and stick with computer only recording.

Linux apps are known for small footprint, both sizewise and resourcewise. Why did you feel the need to expand to 24 more audio tracks? If your projects are complicated enough to require the 24 or more audio and midi tracks you could get from Rosegarden, then the 24 more audio tracks from the 2488 you might do well to look for another solution that wouldn't involve syncing two machines.

If, on the other hand, you were planning to use the computer mainly for midi tracks and the 2488 for audio the problem you're having doesn't really matter. With a midi merge box you could have two inputs to the computer, one the MMC signal from the 2488 and one from a controller keyboard, then set up some kind of cue tracks on the 2488 --- or a complete song that you wanted to overdub midi tracks on --- and track the midi data into the computer. Then when it's time to mix either bring the computer tracks into the 2488 - or the reverse if you have a multi-in sound card.

I got rid of rosegarden, it's an awful program. Sure it can do midi, but I use ardour now and a midi sequencer is being developped. Have you tried MusE? It might give you better results.
