Tascam 246 - noisy transport, help needed!

Well, this thread went weird while I was away :p

That is one clean machine, cjacek. The metalwork is like new - the whole thing, tape well and main board. The metal inside my 246 is pitted with rust :(

As it happens, I rang Tascam parts this morning to get new idler tires. Cost: around £6 each. That's probably more than a trip to the hardware store would cost me for washers, but you know, I'd have to go to the hardware store.

Will post the outcome when they're fitted.

I compared the noise of my 144 and it was a _lot_ better than I remembered. Virtually silent in comparison. They're such great machines. For a home recordist, they do pretty much have everything you want and need.

Daniel, did you use exact the same brand washer as I did or a different one? I am asking, because I would guess that there may be some "variations" of those, maybe they are slightly different size (???) and more importantly! maybe some other brands are made of some different rubber. I've seen some similar washes that are kind of harder than "regular rubber" (if there is such thing...heh heh)....
also only time will show how this "replacement" will hold, and you need to use the machine. I don't use mine much. It's about a year or so since I've replaced mine and it is still fine .

NICE PHOTOS!!!! :D

I actually did replace mine a while back ( Tascam 244) using the information ZEE had up on his site. I didn't use the exact same brand (They sell different stuff at different hardware stores in different locations - I live in Florida.) I bought the same exact size though. Excellent idea, but It didn't really work for me. I remember the rubber washers were super hard to put in. I had to jam them in the groove of the plastic wheel hub. It did end up going in, but then the hub groove was stretched out (say, if you were holding it sideways and looking at it, each flat lip surface was kinda at an angle, and the rubber washer surface was slightly tilted.) I installed everything and pressed some buttons. It did rwd and fwd, but super slow and eventually stopped. I've got so many other machines I've been jumping back and forth on, I just let it sit for a while. I may come back to it soon, but I'll probably order the parts from Tascam too, if I ever feel like I really NEED to get the 244 up to par.
