About three years ago I replaced the capstan drive belt in my 246 portastudio. The first belt lasted for 16 years or so. Now the new one I got from Tascam parts is stretched and slipping already.

Needless to say I’m not too happy… plus they’ve raised the price to $12.00 for that little piece of rubber.

I’m not real keen on sending them $12.00 plus shipping for another poor quality belt.

Anyone have any preferred outlets in the US they can recommend other than Tascam for a new belt. I’ve found a couple on the web, but I know nothing about their products or reputation.

:)

I'm wondering if Tascam is getting belts from China lately. They used to be made in Japan.

I may end up answering my own question. The USA made PRB belts from Russell Industries look promising, but I haven’t found an inexpensive outlet for them yet. They cost a bit more than what Tascam is charging, but if it means I don’t have to take my 246 apart again in 3 or 4 years it would be worth the extra buck or two.

The rub is (no pun intended… get it? Rub… Rubber? Oh, never mind) the real cost of some brands is no more than $3.00 for a flat belt even for the TSR-8, but I don’t know where they’re made… could be China.
