Tascam 244 - A way to record without the tapes?

Hello

I have been given a Tascam 244 and I was wondering if it is necessary to use the tape? Could you connect it to a computer through the line outs, using a Behringer UCA202 for example?

If you can link it to a computer it would be very useful to me :) I'm not too sure about using the tapes, maybe it is my young age that is putting me off.

Hope you can help!

hook it to a 'puter to do what?
I suppose you could use it as a simple mixer.
But you're not talking about using it for its' recording capabilities are you?
Since it records to tape how would it record if there's no tape?

Can you save stuff on your computer if there's no hard drive or flash memory to save it to?
Of course not ...... there has to be memory of some sort and for the 244 the memory is tape.
Like I said ..... you could possibly use it as a mixer

So like I said ....... 'hooking it to a 'puter would be very useful to you' ...... to do what?

With a single post you have shown how much of an amateur I am with these things. Bravo! But I am a quick learner :) I thought it would be possible to use the hard drive on the computer. Ah well, I guess I'll get an up to date tascam.

OK .... then no there's no point in using the 244.
There are plenty of programs (and free ones) that'll let you use your 'puter as a recorder.
You could use the 244 as a mixer and, if it has XLR inputs ( a quick search didn't tell me) then it could be used for it's mic pres saving you having to get that.
So there MAY be things you can do with it but recording without tapes isn't one of them

Welcome to the board BTW ........ lots of info and help around here.

Actually my setup is doing exactly what you are trying to do, I have a Tascam Portastudio 424 which I use as a mixing board, it is 4 channels in, 2 out through a Behringer U-Control UCA202 into the USB port of my computer.

The weak link in this chain I think is the Behringer U-Control UCA202. I'm working on a source of noise in my lines right now and I am getting close to concluding that this little bugger is the source of my problems.

Anyway my setup patches the Tascam line out (R/L) to the RCA inputs on the Behringer unit which is plugged into a USB port on my laptop. I'm running Audacity right now. Works fine and does provide some nice control benefits. For instance in recording drums I use 4 mics and blend it to a stereo mix on the board which is then recorded as a stereo track in Audacity.

That said, at this point I'm not recommending the Behrenger unit.

And also, I'm pretty new to all this... so maybe my setup isn't perfect and perhaps there is no point in my setup to have the Tascam in the loop but it seems to me it is enabling me to do all sorts of things I couldn't do without it.

Just as a follow up I've done some additional testing today, my rig is quiet once again and it was not the Behringer causing the problem.
