I went to clean and use my tascam 122 mkII the other day and found that the tape spun super super fast - my first thought was that a belt snapped but I wonder if someone with some experience in these decks can confirm some possible reasons before I try to get a belt replacement kit.

Thanks!

The Reel Person is correct but it has been my experience and I work on these all the time now that a new motor is the answer but that they are not built any better. This run away capstan motor is happening a lot to an otherwise nice machine. I call it the Chinese Capstan motor. The older Japan capstan motors like in the V-1RX or V900X do not fail to this amount. I can't remember ever changing one in fact despite 40 plus years working on these and also being a Teac Lead Technician. Last I heard Teac still had the motor but at around $130

It has been found what goes wrong with these motors and I have repair at least 15 of them in the past since I have started doing them. It is not that hard but it takes me about 1.5 hours to do it and calibrate the decks speed. I correct all motors no matter what their condition is as soon as I see them. C2 is also changed to a Polystyrene caps instead of surface ceramic. The stability is much better then.
