Learning, always learning
I posed this question to the Tascam section here and haven't seen much action on it, so I figured you analog gurus would be up to the task.;)

Tascam 122 cassette deck.............what are the differences between the different versions? (122, mkII, mkIII)

There is one for sale locally (original 122, non-mk series) and I'm wondering if it is worth buying. I've already got a Nakamichi MR-2 which works beautifully. I wasn't sure how the 122 stacked up against the MR-2 or if I should strictly go with a mkIII series. Anyone?:D

Well, the 'word on the street', not from personal experience regrettably, is that the original is built much better, more bullet proof, vs the other MK series. On the other hand, it's much older, hence more chance of rubber going bad and general maintenance issues. Another thing I've picked up over time is that the sound quality is worse on the original 122. Based on all of this, unless the 122 for sale is in mint, low use condition, stored properly, I wouldn't pay more than about $100 and maybe less. I'd rather add another hundred or two and get a more recent version. As far as features, between the machines, I'm not sure. Just my 2 cents......

Funny you say that. There is one here locally going for about $100. I haven't personally looked at it yet. My MR-2 had Dolby C NR and I was kind of looking for the same in the Tascam (since I obviously can't get dbx unless it's a portastudio). From what little I can find on the original 122, it only has Dolby B, which most people agree sounds like ass.

Actually, I would love to find a dual capstan deck that is rack mountable. I think the Pioneer CT-F900 is dual capstan but isn't rack mountable.

In the meantime, I guess I'll continue hunting for a mkIII edition.
