Anyone know if I can tap into the line out
cable from my cassette deck to hook up headphones?

I just bought a new deck (cheapo) that
doesn't have a headphone jack for monitoring.
I'd like to run the deck directly from my PC sound card (sans external amp) and be able to monitor my recordings.

Is this the best way to do it? If not, any suggestions?

You should be able to get some simple connections i.e Radioshck etc...Y-Cables to plug your headphones in rather than tampering..Never tried it though.....

The Line out is gonna need some boost to drive headphones. If your soundcard has spkr outs you can probably make that work with headphones. You might be able to hear something using Line outs, but it isn't the best way to go. On the other hand, it won't hurt anything to try it. My suggestion would be to check the used market for some piece of crap receiver. I've seen these for $10 -$25 on lawns all over the place. That way you can select input sources and have the option of speakers or headphones to listen to your mix.
A one channel mixer..... :)
I know this is a perversion of the term, "mixer" since this won't mix anything, but it has enough of the capabilities of a mixer to get you where you want to be. Amp/Pre-amp/Headphone amp/Gain/EQ/Pan...
some will even do effects sends (no returns though)

drstawl...

Thanks for the reply.

You're right. The line out from the deck
needs a boost. I can hear it - but can't
get gain.

I gonna try an old mixer I have to run the
signal thru.

Thanks again for your help.
