Hi. I've just been given an recording that was transfered from an old tape recording and transfered onto CD. I have been asked to see if I can improve the quality of the recording if possible and am wondering if there is a free plugin that can get rid of the tape hiss? I'm then going to add some compression, eq and reverb. Any advice appreciated!!

Doesn't Cubase come with a noise reduction plug? And be gentle with the compression, it will raise the noise floor.

Cubase has a noise reduction plug nowdays? I must be really falling behind times, still using SX2

To my knowledge there aren't any free noise reduction plugs. But there are some good ones out there from Sony, Waves etc.

Barring that, see if you can use some high-cut or high-shelf EQ to cut down on some of the apparent level of the hiss. But this might make everything else sound dull as well.

You can also use a downward expander to lower the volume of the hiss in the silent parts.

Tough one either way.

I just used the de-hisser that comes with Magix's Studio 11, and I've got to
say, it worked really well. I used it to remove hiss from a recording I
made using an old AT 9400 stereo mic. The mic sounds great, but it
requires massive amounts of gain--and this added tons of hiss. The
Magix de-hisser removed it completely. I had recorded a nylon-stringed
guitar; to say that I am impressed with the de-hisser's work would be
a massive understatement. Of course, the software costs $79.00 US,
but I've been using Magix's software for a while, and it is worth every penny.
I'm sure it would remove your tape hiss, and for the price you get a complete DAW. Does anyone else use this software?
I love it, and have had nothing but great results with it. There seems to be
a conspiracy of . . . silence? prejudice? about this software. I never see it
mentioned, except to dismiss it with a word or two. Strange . . . .

Does CD Architect support vst plugins?

I don't think it does. I use SF for that and directly inside SF you can export the file to CDA. In the way I work I haven't seen any need to add effects at the CDA level.

This got me thinkin'

I'm surprised someone hasn't developed a "Tape Hiss Plugin" yet... "Makes it sound just like Tape!" lol.

Dunno where that came from... sorry I have nothing useful to contribute. Good info here though. :D

Maybe not a fancy as the above-mentioned plugs, but all you need is to add a track of white noise, roll off at about 14kHz (+/-) and lay it in at a level of somewhere between -60 and -70 dBFS.

G.

Be careful about this though. Unless SF changed it since vrs 7, it creats a track-at-once ref disc. I know of at least one instance where a plant has rejected a master (not mine ;) ) because of it not being disc-at-once.
