I just purchased a Tascam 488 Mkii (no manual) to have some fun with and I remembered enough from my Porta 02 days to be able to start tracking however I have a question about the Tape Cue feature on the channels and monitoring section.
Am I understanding correctly that I can monitor whats on a particular track (say track 1) using the Tape Cue controls while simultaneously using that same channels fader, trim, group assignment, etc... to record new material to track 3 for instance?
The incomplete manual that I was able to download indicates that if I do not use Tape Cue I stand the chance of bouncing tracks along with the new signal. I do not understand why yet I guess I need to make that mistake before I do.
I have to say I really like this machine and it sounds pretty good for what it is. Like I said I started out on a Tascam Porta 2 back in the early 80's but when Cakewalk came out I quickly jumped over to the computer. That led to me giving up on recording for a number of years because I tended to get bogged down in the technology and never get anything done. It killed my muse. And my computers were always at the low end of the specs due to budget so it did not work so well. Also I was trying to use this high end software and stuff and really did not understand recording, signal chain, EQ'ing, etc....Then last year I purchased a Tascam DP004 I think it was. Nice little machine but no ins and outs, no EQ, no effects, no backlit display, menus uggghh!!!, and sooooo dang small. So I sold it telling myself I'd get a nice laptop setup. Well due to budget that won't happen anytime soon so I've gone retro with the 488 and I think it will satisfy my needs for now. I've still got a lot of the cables, inserts and such, and my midiverb iv reverb so I'll just pick up some decent mics and a compressor used and be set until it breaks.
