Tama Starclassic 12x5 snare- $120 - good deal?

Maple with die cast hoops, good shape, Grover snares, with stand.. needs new batter head. Is this thing worth $120? I think it is. It has a ton of crack, really cuts. Is this considered a piccolo size? Good size as a main snare? Recording? It sounds similar to the snare on the new Deftones album. Its tuned really tight, too. I like it so far, just wondering if I should go ahead and buy it?

The Starclassic kits are moderately high priced kits, so that snare technically should cost about 700 bucks. I'd say go for it.

BTW, I don't think the 5" shell depth would qualify as a piccolo, maybe a "popcorn" snare since it's only 12" in diameter.

If you can afford it and you like it, than that is a great price for that drum. I say go for it!

Those go for about 300 new - thats an excellent price for a used one. I have one of the Tama starclassic G-maple 8x14 snares, and I really like the sound of the maple compared to the birch one that I had. Actually you need to watch for two things when buying it:

1. Be certain that it is maple - if it has a metal badge it is made of birch and is from their performer series, it can also be made of birch if it is from the early `90s when even the birch starclassics had painted on logos. Those are pretty rare though. In short, if it's metal, it's birch - if it's painted, it's maple. Either way $120 is a good deal, but you should know what you are buying.

2. Look for cracks around the lugs. The 5" and 5 1/2" straclassic snares often have problems with the wood cracking around the lugs. This can negatively impact the way that the drum holds its tuning.

If all is well, BUY IT UP!
