is it normal to very faintly hear what was recorded on side 1 on side 2?
.

Yes. It's called "crosstalk."

Because the tracks are sharing the same piece of tape, the magnetism from adjacent tracks can bleed into other tracks and be heard faintly. This can happen during the recording process, and/or during long-term storage. All part of the analog bleed, so get used to it. :D

phew!

thanks

i was afraid it was my heads alignment or the tapes

Actually, cross-talk can be emphasized if the head alignment is off whack, or if the tape is decrepid.

I'm assuming you're talking about a quarter-track stereo reel-to-reel format?

yup

can proper alignment be verified by checking how loud the crosstalk is?

Sure. The less crosstalk, the better alignment you have. You can check it by eye-balling the track coils of the heads, but be careful, it's kinda an iffy situation w/ quarter tracks. what you do to the head alignment has to be taken into consideration for both "sides" of the tape.
