I'm new to this list and new to recording in general, but nonetheless I've secured myself a copy of Cubase VST and plan on layin' down some tracks. I need to buy a soundcard to work with (something in the $300 to $450 range). I've been reading some Electronic Musician and I've been checking MF for prices. I'm finding myself fairly swampt with....well, options, i guess. Should I get a mixer (digital?)? The Tascam TD1000 looks good for the money. Or should I just plug straight into the soundcard and mix w/ cubase? If I'm using a DAW does that imply that I'm using the hard disc to record, or do I also need to invest in ADAT, DA38, etc?
Some guidance would be much appreciated.

If you're using your computer (DAW) to record, you record to the hard disk. Noo need for an external "storage" device such as a DAT recorder.

You don't need a mixer. All mixing can be done in Cubase. You most likely need preams for the microphones and although some soundcards have built-in preamps, they're probably not good enough. Mic->preamp->line in on soundcard->mix in Cubase->line out on soundcard to monitors (speakers). Convert the final mix to a stereo wave file with the right properties (easier than it sounds) and burn it on a CD. It's almost too simple.

Read old posts for recommendations on soundcards and computer setup. There are about one million of them.

So I don't need a mixer, eh? From ads and all that business I've always been of the impression that some guy sittin' behind a computer with a mixer is the way it works. I guess not. Heck, that saves me a bundle of money.
thanks for your help. this place is great!
