Hey guys I just finished my first protools mix. I used the projectmix and protools mpowered two mxl 993s as a stereo pair sm57 (snare) pg 56s (toms) pg 52 kick sm 58 (floor tom) and another sm58 on the front of the kick(I know that I dont have the best drum mic setup). I doubled the kick track and eqed one of them higher to make the kick click better. The drums have a little compression on them. I used an sm 57 on the guitars with a line 6 amp. For bass I used a pg 52 and an sm57 on a fender 400 bass cab (I need help on my bass technique!!!!!!***). For the vocals I used a ber b1 condenser but due to limited plugins on protools mpowered I could only use reverb and a little delay. I bounced everything after the mix and added a little limiter and cut 20 hz and boosted 14000 hz. Tell me what you think, please spare musical issues if you find any. This is pretty much my first real try at this and I need a little help!
Thanks,
James

HERE!

the guitar tone is a bit thin. down the distortion a bit maybe. i could only really hear the bass during the solo. it seemed too much in the high register. needed some body and some volume. any compression on the bass?

maybe use a different pickup for the ending guitar solo.

the clean guitar doing the plucking in the verse seemed distant, that may have been what you were aiming for. doubling the guitar doing that hiton pull off thing in the chorus would sound cool.

the drums sound good though. maybe cut somewhere a little in the mid to highs. but i liked the kick sound. maybe a bit more hats and take some mid-lows out of the snare.

Not too bad. I'm wondering why you boosted 14 K though. It's a strange area to boost since there's not much up there other than harmonics. That leads me to believe that the song was probably lacking a bit on the high end and you felt it needed to be a little brighter. Kicking in 14 K would certainly add a bit of that. The only thing is that adding 14 K at the end picks up 14 K from anything and everything that there is being sent to the master fader.
It's best to try and get the right tone from the beginning, so you don't have to make everything brighter later on.
Then again, the only rule is that there are no rules. So if it sounds good, go with it!

i agree, for your first shot good job

I agree......I dont think you should waste your time re-doing this mix......you should use your time constructively recording the rest of your tunes, and getting them documented on cd.

Then fix your tactics later for the second cd......or redo the first cd then, but get it all on disc first, fix it later.....this doesn't need much fixin.

Awesome for your 1st shot, only fault i'd pick is that the snare sounds a little mushy. Kick drum sounds awesome, and the bass sounds pretty good in the solo before the guitar solo.
well done!

Thanks guys

Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I'll post my new mixes as soon as I get a little more work done.

Yeah, very nice for a first effort. My only comment is that the distorted power chord guitar is lacking dynamics....... it's just in your face all the time. Oh, and yes, the snare is a little weak.
