T-racks Mastering

OKAY I NEED TO KNOW WHEN DO U MASTER? I MEAN I USE COOL EDIT TO LOAD AN INSTRUMENTAL PROBABLY FROM FL STUDIO, THEN I RECORD VOCALS. WITHIN COOL EDIT I DO A MIXDOWN INTO ONE STEREO WAV FILE. THEN WHAT DO I DO. sorry for the caps dont feel like erasing after i noticed.lol but after that what do i do? i have t-racks do i load it up in there and play with it or what???/

Master when all your mixes are finished. And playing around with T-racks is probably the most convenient way you have to start figuring out how to master your CD so have at. Go easy, though- you should have GOOD mixes first, then use the mastering tools to get all your mixes sounding like they belong on the same CD.

A good way to start is to load all your mixs into new session and use your mastering tools there to get each track sounding its best IN CONTEXT of all the others.

Whew. I did it. I summed up the art of mastering in 4 sentences.

Mastering is a skill like just about anything else. Think of how crazy you might sound if you said: "I'd like to design a house. I've got a pen. Now what?"

Sure play around. Figure out what all the knobs do. You might get lucky and not totally ruin your album right away. I certainly wasn't so lucky the first time I tried to master something, but you'll eventually get better at it.

As Ryan said it's a skill. Primarily a critical listening skill.

For example, are you able to:

1. Determine a frequency by just hearing it?
2. Can you recognize various types of distortion (phase, gain, etc.)?
3. Can you tell when a track causes ear fatigue?
4. Are you able to determine when something is out of phase by listening only (no meters or visual)?
5. Can you hear the effects of subtle compression?
6. Can you tell when a track sounds "colored" versus well-balanced?

If the answer to any of the above is no (plus many other things I won't go into listing) then you aren't ready for mastering just yet.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't try, that's how you develop these skills. But I wouldn't put my tracks out for public consumption if I really cared about my product with an untrained ear.

FWIW, I learned a lot about mixing by trying to master my own stuff. While I didn't really do all that well with it for a long time, I DID learn where my mixing needed help. Pretty cool and worthwhile activity, actually.

Hahah. I wish it was "my" place. I've somehow ended up working at a place where I can't even believe I'm allowed in the front door. It's the most beautiful room and one of my favourite rooms in the world. I'm definitely on your side here.

How exactly do you train your ear to be able to hear slight compression?
Also im not too sure what you mean by no.6
I can tell a well balanced mix, i can tell if something sounds really nice but i cant really tell if something is coloured unless i have heard the original sound before it was coloured.

but my mastering wont be to the extent as u guys think..when u guys master it is because all you guys mix is live recorded sounds. my mix be a computer genterated beat(fl studio or reasons) no instruments but midi controler. and i record the vocals on top. so the hearing ear wont be that much intense. just want a good quality mix.

I'm sorry to say this, but I think that this forum is open for home-recording guys, so I may learn a lot from this, about home-recording,home-mixing,home-mastering.... all the DIY things, so please teach newbie like me and many other guys some of the techniques,tips n tricks u know instead telling us to get our CD done outside. We are in different countries, and newbies like me just cant afford to study anything properly . But I do love to make good music, man!
I has improved my skills a lot since I knew this forum. Thanks all of u men !!!
