I have to buy cheap stuff...Its in my marriage contract! Plus Sonusman, the 5 year old has gotten into the studio without adult supervision, it has to be something that can be replaced once or twice... which goes along with the Ed method of purchasing... buy cheap, buy twice :0)

Check out Izotope Ozone. It has a lot to offer in terms of mastering. The thing that I think is best about it is that it has a multi-band compressor, exciter and stereo imaging tool. Most other software don't have any sort of multi-band equipment. The different types of visual displays on it are extremely helpful. It works as a plugin so you use it with your editing program or even wavelab. It's only 200 bucks retail.

The coolest thing about it is that it was designed after researching what the members on *this* bbs said was important in a mastering application.

Izotope has a cool mastering FAQ too. It's very informative, even if you don't want Ozone.

The downside is that it is a cpu hog. I only recommend using it if you have over a 500 mhz processor. Otherwise activating too many of its functions really slows your computer down.

I'll second the "ozone". If you haven't tried it.... give it a listen. And it is a helpful tutorial for people like me who are learning.
good luck
