Here is the latest pics of the studio.
It has been a while since I last posted. It takes forever to get anywhere working a day job and gigging and building in the evenings.

I have the studio insulated and the first layer of sheetrock up. I am taping and bedding this weekend, and will start the second layer of drywall Monday.

It is going to be nice to have about 850 sq/ft of room with a/c and a bathroom!

These are pics of just the main tracking / mix room. The drum room is off to the left and the vocal booth and bath room is off to the right. Behind the mis position is an airconditioned machine room for the computer and power amps.

Just happy to show off the progress!

Tom

Beau-ti-ful! I love the dual view into the control room.
Will there be a sight line from booth to booth once the desk and monitors and so forth are in?

-very cool-

Yes!
The monitors sit far enough back where you can see from booth to booth and into the main area as well!

I hope it works well. The thickest glass I could find (within my budget) was 3/8ths glass so each window will have 2 panes of that.
It is bound to be soooo much better than what I am used to anyway!

Well... Miles and miles to go....
Sheetrocking and finishing anyway!

hmm... makes me wish I had planned things a little better before starting to build. It's WAY too late for me to change things around in mine.

i love the control room view. atmospherically, well suited for recording bands!

I hope so. So many bands I have recorded really prefer being all in the same room , or at least have good line of sight, rather then just syching over headphones.

I had toyed with the idea having more (smaller) rooms including a small control room. But it did not seem appealing to run through a labyrinth of doors and openings to make adjustments and then get evryone together for listening sessions. I have gotten so used to working in the same room with everyone, I decided to build a few iso booths but leave the bulk of the room in the main room / mix room. It is about 31 feet by 14 feet for the bulk of it plus an additional 7 by 7 cove for the mix area.

I am reeeealy looking forward to using it. Now I am just having to be patient and not do any short cuts in building and finishing.

Tmix...any more pics yet?? I am just getting ready to start mine and I could use as many tips, tricks and ideas as possible. ;) lol

Looks great dude!! ;)

Peace

That control room window system is genius. might have to do that in my own!

Thanks you guys!

I have the second layer of drywall on the ceilings and am starting the second layer on the walls. It does not look much different. I may try to take shots from inside the iso booths. As soon as the doors come in and I can install them I will let you know. I am getting doors made at Lowes. They are solid core with no doorknob holes. I am putting magnetic latches (the kind that are used in some cabinets but bigger) and weatherstripping on them and big dummy handles and push plates to shove against.

I'll post asap.

Tom

hey, if you want you can do that in my basement. i see you like to do these kinda things, dont worry, i wont charge you. just let me know when you're coming.

Tom,

How much did you pay for your doors?

Earl
(Used to be in Fort Worth but now in Mineral Wells.)

Earl!

Hey Buddy! How is the church conversion to studio coming?
I am still using that rack I bought off you, I wish I had another!.

I am paying about $100 a door or just under it. I missed a good deal at Builders surplus up in Fort Worth. They HAD (new) solid core blanks they would sell for about $20 or installed in a frame for about $50. But I did not need them at the time and had no room to store them. Now I am paying twice the price!

Let me know if you need me to keep my eyes open for something.

Tom

Well, I hate to say it but I was able to snag 12 of them (32"x84") w/birch veneer for $200 about 4 months ago! Good ol' Builder's Surplus...!

Don't playa' hate me... :D

BTW, your place is looking great! Why don't you buy the Mackie HR624's I have for sale on the For Sale page? :D

Are those yours?

I guess I overlooked them.
I have used the 824s befroe and love em. I wonder if I'd need a sub with the smaller version?

I bought a sub (Tannoy) but rarely use it. Just for a quick check.

I'm selling them because I just bought a pair of JBL LSR4328's.

And of course I have my pair of Yamaha NS-10's... :D

Whats up

Hey, im currently under construction in my studio which will be in the upstairs bedroom/study, and im wondering how many layers of drywall i should add? Ive hung furring strips over plaster, and put up 1 layer of 6 mil plastic, with 2 layers of acoustic foam inbetween the strips... (Im not sure if its going to be enough lol but im hoping for the best.) What further measures should be considered if any? The music i produce is mostly HipHop, R&B, and Film Scores.

Mahem,

I am always a little scared to give advice on loading upstairs rooms with heavy drywall just because I dont know anything about your house.

I am also a little concerned that what you are doing may not give you the most bang for buck for your isolation. You may have built what is called a 3rd leaf that actually will hurt your isolation.

For a really good place to ask questions from people doing this for a million years go here:

You will get some straight answers.
