Synthesising drums

Hiyya all.

Been searching for the past few days in an attempt to find out how to make MIDI drum beats, but still no further. I've got a keyboard with a MIDI input and output, and getting a MIDI-enabled audio interface soon. I'd assume it's just a case of connect the computer to the audio interface to the keyboard, then writing out a drum rhythm in some software and getting it to send the data to the interface, then that'll make the keyboard create the beats.
I've been looking for ages for something that'll let me write out a drum beat, but can't find a program for it anywhere. Am I looking in the wrong places? Gone through the first few pages of google links, searched a load of forums, and haven't found anything. Or maybe I'm completely wrong about how to do it, or flicked straight past something that I need?

Hopefully someone can end my confusion :D
 
Should have said in the first post, but I'd be looking for something free or open source too: spent all my spare money on the other recording bits :o
 
Just found Hydrogen, which does exactly what I was after. Thanks guys, problem sorted.
