i have been working with digital audio for about 7 years now. i have been doing all my recording directly into a computer, mixing, and rendering all with software. i am trying to make a move into realtime mixing. here is what i have, (3) alesis adat xt20s, mackie 32 8 with mix automation, two effects processors cabable of receiving midi program change messages, and a jl cooper data sync box. what i am wondering is, can i use a sequencing software like cakewalk to control my whole system. that means, mix automation and effect parameter/program changes? the automation unit i have came with its own software, but i am wondering if it would be better to use something else, like cakewalk or something. any suggestions on how to set this up?

havent done too much with midi, but i have managed to set up my kurzweil pc2x and write an instrument definition for it. so, i am begining to familiarize myself with midi. just to give you more of an idea of what i already know.

I'm not familliar with the mackie automation. Does it accept midi timecode and control? If so you could probably use a sequencer if you can figure out what messages to send to the mackie.

The other gear should work fine with any sequencer but the trick is just digging through the manuals and learning what types of midi messages to use with them.

it accepts smpte time code, and also has midi in and out jacks. i assume one would be able to send midi messages to it. the software controller that came with it uses a 9 pin serial cable. the unit i have is a behringer, looks an awfull lot like the mackie though. ;) anyway, i guess i will just have to play with it. unless someone knows of some online resources.
