sorry about all the questions, but this is my last one (ok, i have a problem!)

on the yamaha MG16/4, can i switch phantom power on single channels, or do i have to do it for all the mic channels? i looked and contacted yamaha and all the dealers with no response!

Unfamiliar with the unit - If there's only one switch, it's likely all of them.

Unless you're using certain or older ribbon mics, I wouldn't worry about it...

if you really wanted to isolate your mics from phantom power, you could make ground lift cables or adapters (or have them made). lifting the ground to a mic does not allow phantom to reach the mic.
