Ok, so I'll try to explain this as best I can.

I am planning in moving soon, and am getting some ideas for a studio in the spare bedroom. I have seen it somewhere before that, in some studios, there is something suspended from the ceiling, like the photo I have attached. Although in the attached photo, it is only above the monitors, I have seen it run the full length of the ceiling. What I am wondering is what it is for, and what they are usually made out of etc?

Here is the link to what I am talking about:

Like I say, the ones I have seen before run the length of the room though, suspended from the ceiling.

"Cloud" - basically a frame with rockwool, a 'basstrap'.

Yup, a ceiling cloud. It'll be worth reading up on acoustic treatment for your room, and you'll find that the cloud is used to treat one of the first reflection points in a room, relative to the listening position. There are similar reflection points on the walls to your left and right, and on the wall behind you as you're seated at your listening position.

Here are a few good resources to get you started on your research:

Room Acoustics Primer - GIK Acoustics
(actually, GIK has a lot of great articles here: Articles - Acoustic Panels | Bass Traps | Diffusors | GIK Acoustics)
RealTraps - Acoustic Basics
(same deal here, lots of great articles at RealTraps other than just the primer: RealTraps - Acoustics Articles)

Got them in my recording room and control room, great to control reflections between the floor and ceiling if you want to have hard floors in the rooms.

Are you moving to a place you own? I mean can you pull the drywall off the ceiling without getting sued?

here is another link for making your own panels, I used 1x4s I got at a local lumber yard, I made mine 24x48 inches. I also bought a pneumatic stapler and cordless electric scissors which was a big help. I made a total of 30 panels. I used 2 inches of rockwool for the wall and ceiling panels and 4 inch for the corner traps. I found a 48 inch wide 100 yard long roll of burlap on Ebay for 100 bucks. I have about 30 bucks in each panel. I stapled all the frames together. with the burlap I did not use the cardboard strips as shown in the video.
