Sure 57 for drums?

I've heard that SURE 57's are decent for recording snare. What about cymbals and/or toms?

i'm a fan of the three mic technique on drums. i like an sm57 on the snare/hi hat, a large condensor as an overhead, and some sort of low frequency dynamic on the kick.

Sm-57 is still my first choice for snare (rock/pop style snare I should say). It just says "ouch" in a cool way when a hard hittin' Neandrathal(sp?) drummer slams a snare. They're decent on rack toms but I prefere condensors there. On a hi hat they're not bad. Overheads, well, they're just not fast enough for my taste but I know Voxvender uses them there and the tunes of his I heard sounded good to me.

Are you saying you basically use 3 mic's when recording drums?I know that everyone has a certain "sound" they want. To me 3 mics would give kinduva LED ZEP sound (cool). Is that your preference?

i used to prefer mic'ing everything (actually, leaving it to the engineer). then, i started mixing. soon, others asked me to mix their material as well. i found myself turning off drum channels until only about three or four were left. every single time, the snare, one overhead, and the kick were left. and, about half the time, one other channel would be left. i wouldn't say it leads to a led zep sound. i think that's more of a room issue (and obviously a john bonham issue).

What brand overhead? Where, in reference to the cymbals and tom's. do you place the overhead?

you might do better with 2 small diaphram condensors on over heads... at 4041's or Sm 81's, octava mc012's are supposed to be pretty good... better stereo with 2 (as opposed to one) obviously.

57's on toms... If you can borrow enough of them put put a 57 on the top and bottom of every head... when you mix if you need more attack turn up the top head... need more tone? turn up the bottom head... you will usually hardly have to eq...
