Summer (Original Instrumental)

I think it all sounds pretty good, but the reverbs make it sound disjointed. The drums seem much farther away than the rest of the instrumentation. I'd personally like it all a bit drier and more cohesive in that regard. Other than that I think the tones and general mix are pretty good.

Thanks for the feedback Greg. I don't know if you heard the original version. I don't have it now, the links all point to the latest version. But I did cut back the reverb on the lead guitar, while keeping the delay the same and I brought the drums "closer". Not by much in both cases but just a little. I'll do it again and see what happens :)

I make that same comment on a lot of people's mixes. It's just my own personal taste really. I don't like it when everything sounds like it's in a different room. There's nothing wrong with that if that's what you want to do, but for me I look at a mix like it's a band in a room. You never see a band with the drummer in another building, or 200 feet behind the rest of the band, so I don't think mixes should sound like that either. That's just me.

It might be just you but your opinion means a lot to me. You make me think of things I may be consciously or otherwise ignoring. I am interested in points of view. It would be great if I was enough of a wizard to come up with perfection first time but I am still learning too, even after more than 8 years of it. Its all experience to me so I appreciate the feedback :)

Try this version. I had found an effect in Sonar X1 that I didn't know I had and got a bit carried away with it. It is called Sound Stage. I pulled the drums back in a bit in this version while still trying to retain a touch of roominess. See if that is any better. There is still a lot of room to move, no pun intended...

Actually the drums were a lot further away than the rest of the instruments. It was right up at the top of the track list, so I dragged it down so it was closer to the guitars. Works great!!! :D

Still trying this soundcloud thingy :D

All sounding pretty good to me but I haven't heard the earlier versions. My only beef would be the ride cymbal on the chord change... sounds quite robotic - otherwise, all good.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll see what I can do with the robot :)

You may have better ears than I do, its almost a cert. I would have thought that a good drummer would keep a relatively constant velocity on the ride. At least I don't continue the ride while performing a drum fill. I would need three hands to manage that. But I will see what I can do about humanizing the ride Thanks again

Ok, I have addressed some of the points made by various ppl, added a guitar arpeggio and stumbled upon a more refined tone for the lead guitar. This is a separate link so comparisons may be made with the previous take.

When I checked out the ride cymbal velocities, they were quite random and humanized fairly subtantially, with the emphasis on the beats and subdued between beats. So I emphasised the differences, hopefully doesnt sound so robotic.

Relatively is the key word. The best drummer in the world doesn't hit the same cymbal in exactly the same place at exactly the same velocity 16 times in a row... and even if they could, they wouldn't.... There's a "how to program drums" tute starting up in the drums forum which promises to be useful. Get on board...
