Yes, I know I have outstanding recordings to polish, and re post, he says blushing bashfully. Acquiring my first actual physical bass guitar a week or so ago kind of sidetracked me and then the good old UK weather played a blinder and next thing I know I'm learning to play the bass, having not owned one previously. I play a few guitar chords to throb along to and next thing you know I get some lyrics spring to mind. Here they are, suggestions are welcome, as are any other opinions. Always happy to read and think about what others have to offer.

Many thanks

Tim

Summer

V1

You’ve taken everything too far, and I see that you’ve been putting

on your make up and another lacy, insufficient number, while I’m

tumbling over all the things you are.. it’s time for us, we might engage

in something which tastes better than the rain/reign of summer.

Chorus X 3

Unwrap the box in silence, tear the bow and take the cover off.

If you have nothing else to say, I think I might as well be lost

In what you call a game, where losing means it’s time to count the cost..

it’s you.

V2

I’m trapped within your sideways glance, ‘till I take your hand, we’re

dancing to a well versed innuendo written on my chequered past,

Confuse me with your indignation, before the music makes you laugh

And I’m no longer standing in the warm torrential rain of summer.

Another little cynical celebration. I like the double edge.
The repetition of the lyric works well but is it worth exploring an extra verse? I think so.
The bass playing is fine - particularly for a 1s recording after your fist acquisition of the instrument.
As a bass player I'd suggest adding a little boost of 3 to 5 dbs at 3khz for a little definition. Also, when tracking the bass have the bass drum prominent in the guide track so that you lock into it's accents.
Additionally - remember that an octave jump is as good as a lick & run in many instances. 2 strings up & two fret higher - it's easy to do.
I like the song - it's also nice to be creative when learning - it provides encouragement.
Good job.

Ray, you are not suggesting my writing has a touch of cynicism by any chance? Mmm must be the time of life I’m at and the influences. I’ll ponder an additional verse, I tend to think that most people will have heard me drone for long enough at around the four minute mark, but I could most likely come up with another verse, although it might get a bit more decadent having already kept it the right side of salacious for the most part.

I have to own up and say that the previous track before “Summer” I played a midi bass on my keyboard, so this is actually my first attempt with the real thing. I do very much appreciate your advice re: the bass octaves and equalisation, also the drum/bass relationship. I know the notation on a regular guitar pretty well so knowing where to play should be straight forward, I need to listen and observe and pick up a few pointers so that’s my focus before I try anything too acrobatic. I knew I’d need a real bass at some point and kind of relished the thought of the narrow neck and the opportunity to stretch my hands a little more which might also be useful when I get back on a regular guitar, and then decide to get a six string bass and bang goes the narrow neck, but I like playing it and think I’ll get to grips wit it as time passes. I’m a bit of a jump in the deep end kind of eccentric old fart so pretty typical.

Once again thank you for your encouraging input.

All the best

Tim,
I'm 1st & foremost a bassist. I started pplaying it in '74/75. A cheap Japanese short scale EB copy by Coronet. I even played it through my parent's stereo until I bought an amp (5 years later). It's amazing how patience and laybying worked back then.
I quite like your bass playing. I've actually been a lot simpler of late in my playing. Sometimes chugging along to the root is the only thing that works for a song. & , of course, a busy song doesn't need a busyy bass.
I REALLY enjoy playing bass. I'm not good at it but it's fun. Once the brain starts to function in bass land - as opposed to guitar player with a bass - you'll be swinging.
Oh, & I REALLY like the song!

Thanks Ray, as always your comments and encouragement are really appreciated. I'm well driven as an individual but I don't know everything, hence every bit of advice is explored and taken on board. I will crack on with my bass and get into that groove in the next few days as I have a break from work which I am determined will be a musical escape for a whole week. The bass I got is an ESP B-206 with the figured maple top. It's my first bass so I'm hoping it will have sufficient flexibility to cater for a range of applications, as I have to try and buy wisely. I just got an Orange combo to play it through so there may be some tremors next week :-) I'm going to re take most of this track while I am not working so will re post it over in the MP3 section once I have it playable.

all the best

This little suggestion may get some laughs in various places BUT...consider buying the behinger BDI21. It's a DI box as well as an impressive tone tool. It's about $40 down under. A VERY good copy of the very expensive Sansamp.
It'll allow you to record bass without an amp on those occasions when loud isn't possible.
Unlike many Behri units it is solid, reliable & just plain good at its job.

Thanks Ray, yes I just looked it up and for the cost of the unit it seems like it's certainly worth having go with one. I have a few ways of injecting the bass into my recording set up already but that small unit looks to have some additional sound flexibility that I don't currently have. Yes, loud is not always convenient with the bass, especially the low B, the wife reckons I'll cause some structural damage if I keep firing up the combo. To be fair I have been using headphones for recording some of the noisy stuff but found doing that for a lot of hours gave a my ears a ring which lasted for a few days, which I almost convinced my self was coming from my recordings until I noticed it was still there when I wasn't using the studio.

Thanks

Tim

Thanks Ray, there are a few things about the track that I think can be improved upon in a musical sense. I've had a bit of a horrid few weeks with work sapping my creativity, I also had man flu, which lasted for ages. All in all not a good month for me. However, I've had a few very encouraging remarks in relation to "Summer" yours included so this weekend I'm going to work on it and will hopefully be able to post a revised version before Monday. A little encouragement goes a long way, it will do me some good, chilling with the instruments and peak indicators :-)

many thanks
