Hi All,
The feedback on my last submission was very helpful - thanks! The main thing I fixed was the bottom end.

I had another tune that was a bit muddy - Summer Love. I loaded it into Sonar and tweaked the bass the same way (bass guitar and drums). Lowering the overall bottom end a bit seems to have worked - less mud more definition.

I'd appreciate if you could listen and let me know if it sounds okay - mainly bass/kick but if any other suggestions on the mix would be good too.

Thanks !

Summer Love

This is definitely sounding like no mud. At least on my system.

Sounds nice in the bass arena. The snare is low or just no playing all the time? Couldn't tell. I do hear it in the fills.

:)

Hey bigbubba - thanks for the listen and the response!

Yep the drum patch is more rimshot but does have some snare on the fills. Can't separate the two unfortunately.

:D:):D:)

Spent yesterday redoing the vocals and remixing the whole thing from the bottom (literally) up (in Sonar).

Found something interesting.... I mixed on my Event TR8's and it sounded okay. Then I put on my cheapo headphones (Koss TD80's) and found the mix was really bass heavy. Disappointed, I shut it down and call it a day.

This morning I listened through my better headphones (AKG K240 MKII). It sounded pretty much like I remembered through the monitors, which was nice. I did some tweaking and then uploaded it to Soundclick.

Removing the bottom end on the previous version did just that, which cleared up the mud but lost the bass definition.

This is a much different mix. I mixed bass and drums first, then added the additional parts making sure that the bass didn't disappear. I trimmed the bottom of pretty much all the other instruments to give the bass some space, along with panning.

I took the reverb down to almost nil. I didn't compress the master mix at all, which I usually do. I may rethink that and go back and try another mix with faux mastering. But for now I'd like to get your feedback on the overall blend.

Let me know what you think....

i think the bass could come up a bit more. the level that is, the low end sound of it sounds about right. i think the vocals could use some reverb and the guitar solo somewhere in the middle sounded a bit muddy, maybe boosting the high frequencies somewhere would help.

my two cents

Thanks for the listen and the feedback greyharmonix. Good suggestions which I'll look into...

:D:):D:)

The bass sounds well defined. It's not boomy. But still audible. You can hear all the little fills on the bass.

:)

Ido,
you construct solos really well.
Lovely song
The keyboard top lines work well too.
You've about cracked it setting up the bottom end - now write it all down & tell me how!
Sweet mix.

Nice Tune Ido, I wish to hear more bass too:D

Great vox on this.

the solo is really nice, could have some more prescense and roll of some of the low mud.

you write good tunes mate:cool:

Thanks bigbubba - I appreciate you taking the time to check this out a second time. The bass is always a challenge for me so if it sounds okay I'm very pleased....

Thanks Ray - I used the VC64 Comp on the Rickenbacker. There's a problem with the site and I can't post JPG files now. I'll try to post a pic of the settings (it's a comp /eq) when I can.

Thanks Nak - I forgot to roll off the bass on the lead, I did on most of the other tracks. I'm thinking of playing with this a bit so I'd add that on my to do list...

Very nice Ido. Bottom end is nice and tight, just like they should be. :D

This might be your cleanest mix yet..... that I can remember. Everyhting sounds juat right to me.

Nice song, as all your songs are.

I don't have a good ear for details, unless something is blatantly wrong. I don't hear anything wrong with this. I like the rim shot playing the main part with the sanre just doing the rolls. The only thing I REALLY don't like is the cymbals, but you've already acknowledged that in other threads.

Love your voice, and the guitar tone in the solo is awesome.

Sounds good Gerry!
Love the way you sing this, great feeling. Nice guitar solo. I love it when a solo says so much with so little, kinda Clapton-like. Recording sounds very balanced to me. Cymbals could use some more life but that's nit-picking.
Well done!

Thanks Greg - mixing in SONAR now is getting a little easier. I still need to get a few plugins to replace my hardware or, find a way to route it through.

Thanks Rami - yeah those cymbals suck :p LOL....

Thanks Joey - I'm not 100% happy with the vocals but they are better than the previous take...lol.... still need to do some volume automation on them. I find them a wee bit loud in spots. I tried some last night but still need to do another , better pass or fiddle with my mouse to fix them.

Okay here's some pictures of the settings for the bass comp plugin/channel. Mike went through a POD XT Live pedal on Ampeg SVT ??? patch, then into Sonar initially. There's no eq on the bass channel only on the comp plugin. I'm not sure what the SVT patch might have for eq though....

Update:
I did a bunch of volume automation on the vocals and added a smidge of reverb to make them "airy". I think this is now pretty much done unless someone has some more suggestions on the mix...

Sounds nice and smooth man.

I've heard one or two prior mixes of this and think this one may be best. I like the expressiveness of your vocals in particular as well as the thick tone on the lead.

The pic looks like something from "blue lagoon" or something .
