HI there,

Was wondering if anyone could suggest a good but cheap as possible set of active monitors for home recording. I have a very limited budget, but dont want to use headphones or the crappy speakers that came with my machine.

Is it better to use a HiFi amp with a cheap set of speakers or an active set?

I was thinking below the £100 mark (or $160).

I'd appreciate any help that anyone can throw my way on this.

Cheers

Oh yeah - I'm in the UK too if anyone has any suggestions about where to get some.....

I'd say save your money. $160 won't get you much, and you'll outgrow whatever it does get you very quickly. Instead, I'd monitor on headphones or a stereo, and save up to around the $500 price point (maybe a little less), where you can get some of the decent entry-level monitors like the Event PS or TR series, or the Fostex, or the M-Audio.

If you must buy now, I'd go used, and see what ebay has to offer. You might find some Alesis Monitor 1's available in that neighborhood. But again, I'd hold off, since you probably don't want to outgrow your purchase within a month of making it.

just my 2 cents...

The only monitors u'll get for that price in the UK are something like edirol 10 watt jobbies.........which will be horrible :p I'd mix on yer stereo for a while like mgraffeo said and save for something decent.
