with RCA male to TRS and at least 10 feet in length. I know balanced is out of the question since RCAs are used (from what I've been finding through google). I've found only 2 companies, Monster and Mogami, that offers similar quality cables (from what I've been reading). So, what would be the best cables I can find in this configuration?

So why would you want to use TRS?

RCA to TS would be an unbalanced cable, would it not?

My suggetion: DIY. Neutrik or Switchraft for the connectors (assuming they make RCA), Mogami or Belden for the wire, a soldering gun, some solder, some ventilation, and an opportunity for some Zen time! :D

Oh, and forget Monster. Overpriced and overhyped stuff from a company that's all about "branding."

Yep... They seem to have taken a page from the BOSE approach: The best sound advanced marketing can give you.

You might think them overpriced, but Monster Cables are good cables. Don't forget the lifetime warranty and free replacement of defective cables. I have a guitarist friend who uses only Monster cables for that reason alone. If he has a problem with the cable he goes to the nearest Guitar Center and exchanges it.

I personally make a lot of my own cables, and I agree with the Mogami (or Canare makes good cable too) and Neutrik connectors scenario that MadAudio suggested.

OK. So I want to make my own cables. I've done a fair amount of small electronic soldering before and have the well ventilated workspace and a soldering gun + solder (although I may need to upgrade as it's from radio shack and has only ever been used on really small wires).

If I wanted to make some balanced patch cables - would my purchase look something like this:

Mogami cable: http://www.markertek.com/SearchProduct.asp?item=2697&off=4&sort=prod
Switchcraft connectors: http://www.markertek.com/SearchProduct.asp?item=SW280&off=0&sort=prod

...and a couple of questions:
- What gauge is the wire for guitar cables, patch cables, mic cables, etc.
- Any special soldering techniques or suggestions?
- Is there anything else I should know?

Thanks!

Nice responses!

MadAudio: You are correct but I wasn't sure and I was trying to take advantage of the balanced connections on my monitors. It's obvious now that's not happening if I'm using RCA jacks.

The need for an RCA-to-TRS cable was to connect my audio interface (RCA and stereo mini-plug outputs) to my monitors (RCA and TRS inputs).

I don't know enough about balanced cables to know if this was possible or not other than the little I've read about recently. I could very well make the cable I need but I'm too concerned about quality and I feel too inexperienced to make a good quality cable.

I wanted to post a link to tthe Rane interconnection guide, which shows you how to connect just about any type of connector to any other connector, but im not allowed to being this is my first post.

put /note110.html after rane.com

Just buy some good TRS cables (they will also work with unbalanced signals). Then go to Radio Shack and buy a couple of RCA-to-1/4" adapters. Works like a charm.

This wouldn't cause any additional noise would it? I really want the cleanest signal possible.
