Sugestions on eccentric recording equipment?

I'm working on an old skool RnB record and I'm looking for unique ways to get old tones, so I'm thinking of getting an old 50's-60's tube tape deck or home stereo amp to run a line through before going into my 'puter, to give vocals and guitars that old-time roundness.

Has anyone had luck doing this? If so, what did you use and what hazards did you encounter (ie; buzz, hum, zeta death rays, etc.) I'm even thinkin gof getting an old Vox practice amp I have from the 70's re-wired for this.

Most of that sound came from the techniques that were used at the time.

The mics and the preamps had a lot to do with it as well.

Back in the 60's and into the 70's bands were playing together in one room. They were using top of the line mics and preamps because there were no 'prosumer' versions.

So, you need to get a band and put them in a decent sized room. Then mic everything up with RCA, Neuman, and Sennheiser mics into neve preamps and a nice 2 inch 8 track deck.
 
try a ribbon mic and see if that does it for you. perhaps a cascade fathead.
 
Sound bleeding is important. Like Farview said, bands used to record together in one room, and a bit of bleeding was inevitable.
 
Understood about the recording techniques, equipment, etc. I'm already using a fathead - I'm looking for eccentric devices people have used to get old school tones - understood that mic and mic placement is more important than type of preamp, etc. I've been recording for a long time on (sometimes wonderful, sometimes unfortunate) cheap equipment - Fathead or Oktava mod 219 into a Rane MS 1b into a TC300 compressor into a Aphex 109 for vocals and acoustic guitar, an ART pro channel with mullard tubes for electric guitar and bass and otherwise working in the box with loops, VST, etc.

I'm interested in finding left-field ways of getting odd tones besides standard eqing, compression, etc. Hence the idea for old tube stereo equipment to line into post-preamp/pre-soundcard. Just to add some heavy tube mofungo- the ART (a pseudo tube) is kinda schtinko for vocals - very dirty eq and a so so preamp, even with good tubes, but it's awesome on electric guitar.

Any great discoveries from outside thinking out there?
 
I've seen mic preamps that were derived from the tube preamp portions of old tape decks (Akai etc.). I expect that sort of electronics may contribute to what you are looking for.
 
Exactly! I'm hoping someone around here has actually tried the idea and can give me/us an idea of what benefits/drawbacks doing this actually gives!
